Cell Notes #1 Cell Theory Prokaryote vs Eukaryote Bacteria/Plant/Animal/Virus
The Cell Theory Three Main Ideas • All organisms are composed of one or more cells. • The cell is the basic unit of organization of organisms. • All cells come from pre-existing cells
Two Cell Types Prokaryotic Cells– do not contain internal membrane-bound structures (Organelles) • Most unicellular organisms such as Bacteria are Prokaryotes. Eukaryotic Cells – contain internal membrane-bound structures. • All multi-cellular plants and animals are Eukaryotes
Prokaryotic Cells Characteristics • Simple cell • Small in size • No Nucleus • Has Nucleic Acids (DNA/RNA) • No Membrane bound Organelles • Examples: Bacteria, Yeast
Eukaryotic Cells Characteristics • Has DNA/RNA • Found in Multi-cellular organisms (Plants and Animals) • Has Nucleus • Complex Cell • Has membrane bound organelles
Virus • Cause Sickness or Death • Non-Living • Has Nucleic Acids (DNA/RNA) • Replicates ( Reproduces) by infecting living cells (host)
