  3. Imperialism The practice of a strong nation dominating a weaker one militarily, socially, politically, or economically.

  4. At the turn of the century, the US began to have a new outlook on foreign policy (they way they interact with the world) This was happening around the world, but people were troubled that the US was becoming involved b/c of its history as a colonial holding of Great Britain's The late 1800s marked the peak of European imperialism, with much of Africa and Asia under foreign domination. By 1890, the United States was eager to join the competition for new territory. The US Looks at the World in a New Way

  7. The Pressure to Expand 10.1 • What factors led to the growth of imperialism around the world? • In what ways did the United States begin to expand its interests abroad in the late 1800s? • What arguments were made in favor of United States expansion in the 1890s?

  8. Manifest Destiny • Unlike previous “Manifest Destiny” where U.S. expansion was in North America, the new “Manifest Destiny” extended to heavily-populated islands, far from the US., and viewed for the purpose of becoming colonies. Not territories or states.

Growth of Imperialism • Several factors account for the growth of imperialism. • Economic factors: The growth of industry increased the need for natural resources. • Nationalistic factors: Competition among European nations for large empires was the result of a rise in nationalism—or devotion to one’s own nation. • Military factors: Europe had better armies than Africa and Asia, and it needed bases around the world to refuel and supply navy ships. • Humanitarian factors: Europeans believed that they had a duty to spread the blessings of western civilizations to other countries.

PEAL!ing….YEAH  • Describe some similarities between the pro and anti imperialist values or tactics. • P: While the opinions toward US imperialism were quite varied domestically, there were some commonalities in their communication tactics. • E: Both the pro and anti imperialist camps called on American culture and values to justify their positions. • E: This is evident when examining the poetry of Rudyard Kipling and David Green Haskins. Both Kipling (a pro-imperialist) and Haskins (an anti-imperialist) used the Christian religion to justify expansion and both used poetry as a means of expression. • A: Even though Kipling and Haskins had extremely different viewpoints toward American imperialism they both manipulated closely held values of Americas to justify their positions and did so in the same form, therefore they were using similar tactics. • L: Even though the opinion toward imperialism was divergent, the same tactics were used by both camps to sway Americans to agree with their opinion.
