  1. Mesopotamia Prepared by Kitkina Anya

  2. Mesopotamia is the area between the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. • Mesopotamia doesn’t refer to any particular civilization. Over the course of several millennia, many civilizations developed, collapsed, and were replaced in this region including the Summerians, Akkadians, Babylonians and Assyrians.

  3. Literature Writings from Mesopotamia (Uruk, modern Warka) are among the earliest known in the world, giving Mesopotamia a reputation of being the Cradle of Civilization, therefore it regarded by some as the oldest known civilizations.

  4. Astronomy • Mesopotamian astronomers worked out a 12-month calendar based on the cycles of the moon. They divided the year into two seasons: summer and winter. The origins of astronomy as well as astrology date from this time.

  5. Family life • Mesopotamia across its history became more and more a patriarchal society, one in which the men were far more powerful than the women. • As for schooling, only royal offspring and sons of the rich and professionals, such as scribes, physicians, temple administrators, went to school.

  6. Gods and Goddesses • The principal Mesopotamian Gods were identified with the forces of nature, such as Anu (sky god), Sin (moon god), Enki (water god), and Enlil (wind god).
