Vietnam War. HOW DID THE US FIRST GET INVOLVED. French & Japanese had controlled Vietnam!. VIETNAM, in South-East Asia, was part of the old French colony called Indo- China. The JAPANSE captured it from the French in the Second World War. The French tried to “re-colonize” Vietnam after WWII.

  2. French & Japanese hadcontrolled Vietnam! • VIETNAM, in South-East Asia, was part of the old French colony called Indo- China. • The JAPANSE captured it from the French in the Second World War. • The French tried to “re-colonize” Vietnam after WWII. • The Vietnamese wanted independence!

  3. Ho Chi Minh-Communist Vietnamese resistance group, THE VIETMINH was formed to fight the French. Its leader was HO CHI MINH, a Communist.

  4. Ho Chi Minh & Vietminh Perspective! • Ho Chi Minh was fighting the French to win independence! They fought the Japanese after WWII Then they fought the French when they tried to re-colonize Vietnam!

  6. The U.S. Red Scare Why did America become involved in Vietnam in 1956! Uncle “Ho” is communist and wanted the country to be united then South Vietnam will become Communist too!! The United States enters into South Vietnam to fight against North Vietnam!

  7. Domino Theory The USA supported the leader of South Vietnam- President Diem Communist government in N Vietnam ordered the Vietminh to begin a terror campaign against Diem’’s government. If South Vietnam falls to communism ..the other countries will too!

  8. Early Presidents in Vietnam President Eisenhower & John F. Kennedy- both sent in advisors and military support into South Vietnam Early stages of American- Vietnamese 20 year War!

  9. Vietnam War in 1964! Most American’s think of 1964 as the beginning of the Vietnamese/American War. That is when President Lyndon B. Johnson begin to send in American Combat Troops. U.S. also begins to bomb North Korea- Rolling Thunder!

  11. Many Vietnamese in South didn’t like President Diem! President Diem in South was corrupt- it was suppose to be a democracy! Image 2: Police Chief shooting a “suspected” Ho Chi Minh supporter in the South! This shouldn’t happen in a democracy! Image 1: A Buddhist Monk in South Vietnam burned himself alive as protest against President Diem.

  12. Who were the Vietcong? Vietnamese in the South that really supported Ho Chi Minh in the north and wanted a united Vietnam. They established an army in the South & used guerilla warfare to attack U.S. troops in the South and the southern government! It was very confusing for the U.S. Soldiers in South Vietnam!

  14. What were the Pentagon Papers? A 1971 secret defense department history of the Vietnam War. The Report made it clear the American government had LIED & misled people about U.S. winning the war. When it was published in the NY Times Americans were Outraged! Daniel Ellsberg was the journalist.

  15. How did the Vietnam War end? 1st Major war America Lost! No parades for the Vietnam Veterans 58,000 Americans Died Approximately 1.5 Million Vietnamese Died 1975 Americans leave South Vietnam and army in North takes over and unites the country!

  16. One United Country Ho Chi Minh is considered to be a Hero of Vietnam! Vietnam becomes communist politically and is still communist today! The capital of South Vietnam, Saigon is renamed Ho Chi Minh City. Uncle “Ho” died before the end of the war.
