Our mission The Faculty of Engineering provides its graduates with top quality education in engineering and computer science, preparing them to practice their professions competently, to continue learning in their discipline, and to move into other related fields including business, law and medicine. Excellence and diversity in research are essential to our mission and build on strong collaboration with industry and government research laboratories. The Faculty encourages a spirit of entrepreneurship amongst its professors and students. The Faculty strives to provide a learning environment that promotes excellence and innovation, ethical practice and responsibility towards society. Dr. Murat Saatcioglu leads the Canadian delegation for earthquake reconnaissance investigations to the Peoples Republic of China (September 2008)

History of the University of Ottawa • 1848: Establishment of Bytown College • 1866: College of Ottawa receives a Royal Charter • 1904: Construction begins on Tabaret Hall • 1919: First female students admitted to the University • 1965: Passing of the University of Ottawa Act by the provincial legislature; the University becomes a publicly-funded institution • 2009: • The most important bilingual university in North America • Ranked 7th in Canada for research intensiveness • Fourth largest cooperative education program in Canada • More than 360 programs of study in 10 faculties Many alumni and friends of the Faculty participate to the Faculty’s Homecoming Dinner during the Homecoming 2008 celebrations (September 2008)

History of the Faculty of Engineering • 1874: First courses in mathematics and science offered on campus • 1953: The School of Pure and Applied Sciences is established • 1962: The School becomes the Faculty of Pure and Applied Sciences • 1972: The Faculty becomes the Faculty of Science and Engineering • 1986: A separate Faculty of Engineering is established with 4 departments (chemical, civil, electrical, mechanical engineering) • 1997: Transfer of the Department of Computer Science to the Faculty and establishment of School of Information Technology and Engineering (SITE) • 2009: The Faculty of Engineering includes three departments (chemical and biological, civil, mechanical engineering) and SITE The second edition of the student competitions in entrepreneurship and innovation allows for the awarding of six prizes totalling $45,000 to graduate studentes (3) and to undergraduate students (3) (March 2009)
