Discovery Education Video: Physical Science: The Basics - Energy Energy exists in a variety of forms and can be transformed from one kind to another. Heat is one type of energy. On Earth, energy comes from a variety of sources, including the sun and falling water.
Rapidly moving molecules in a warm object can “excite” molecules near the object causing them to begin moving more rapidly as well. Thermal energy can be transferred from one object or substance to another.
As the rapidly moving molecules hit the slower molecules they will behave similarly to pool balls being struck.
Conduction • Convection • Radiation Thermal energy can be transferred by three different methods:
Discovery Education Video: The Movement of Heat Heat energy can be transferred in three ways: conduction, convection, and radiation.

Conduction is the process by which heat is transferred by contact between two objects.
Convection is the process by which heat is transferred by a current of water or gas.
Radiation is the process by which heat is transferred through air or space by electromagnetic waves.
Key Questions: • 1. Can an object transfer heat by more than one method at the same time? Explain and give an example. • 2. Why is heat transfer by radiation necessary for life on earth? • 3. Based on what you know about convection, describe how you think a "convection oven" would work.
