  2. What Should We Be Concerned About? • Malware • Viruses • Worms • Trojan horse • Spyware • Adware

  3. What is Malware • Any software which gets installed for a bad purpose • Includes viruses, worms, trojan horses, spyware and adware

  4. What is a Computer Virus? • Attaches to program or file • Spreads from one computer to another • Can damage computer • Usually an executable • Usually spread through sharing files or e-mails with attachments

  5. What is a Worm? • Similar to Virus • Can travel without human interaction • Can replicate itself

  6. What is a Trojan Horse • Tries to trick you into thinking it’s helpful program • Will cause damage to your system • Can do bad or REALLY bad things to computer • Can change desktop wallpaper • Can destroy essential computer files • Can open backdoor to computer, allowing people to hack your computer

  7. Spyware • Program installed on your machine • Will monitor user activity • Can be used to get important personal information • Can cause system slowdown

  8. What is Adware? • Program to spy on Internet activity • Provides advertisements to your computer, without your consent • Usually exists as pop-ups, or other obtrusive ads

  9. How to Prevent Bad Software • Protect Yourself • Use Anti-Virus Programs to protect • Run Malwarebytes to remove • BE AWARE OF INTERNET ACTIVITY!

  10. Free Programs to Protect You • Anti-Virus: AVG • Anti-Virus: Microsoft Security Essentials (recommended) • Malware Removal: Malwarebytes • Anti-spyware: Spybot • When all else fails: Hijackthis! (and send to helpful people who know what to do)
