  2. Definition of Therapeutic Communication • Goal directed, focused dialogue between nurse and patient, that is fitted to the needs of the patient. (Arnold & Boggs , 2006)

  3. Purpose of Therapeutic Communication • Provide a safe place for the patient • Provide information and emotional support that each patient needs to achieve maximum health and well being.

  4. Topics to be covered • Communication between staff • Communication in the Emergency Department • Communication with the paediatric patient • Communication with families • Communication in palliative care

  5. In conclusion • Quality of communication can forecast treatment goals and outcomes across a range of diagnoses and treatment settings (McGuire-Snieckus, McCabe, Catty and Priebe, 2006)
