Car-free housing development From early nineties on discussed by experts and on conferences, public funding for research Several movements to realize car-free housing projects started Some projects with different concepts realized:Amsterdam, Bremen, Cologne, Freiburg, Hamburg, Münster, Munich, Vienna, Edinburgh from totally car-free to individual choicefrom strong to liberal legal regulations

ConclusionMobility High rate of non-motorized transport Pedestrians are dominant in the quarter Bicycle is the main mode of transport although public transport and car sharing have been very much in the focus of discussion before Car sharing works fine A few illegal cars Mobility works – it is no big deal
ConclusionProject Communicative and lively neighbourhood Active neighbourhood organisation High satisfaction of the residents High living quality and public space Children heaven Still some prejudice in the surrounding neighbourhood(“They have a car”) Car-free housing pays off!

Car-free housing today Almost no new projects or initiatives Theme is less discussed then in the ninetiesalthough time should be fine (sustainability, high oil prices etc.) Why? Car-free housing is (too) complicated Less flexibility Developer view Mobility management and housing are still separated What is next?
Next step Car-free housing projects demonstrate good and functioning solutions These are also of interest for a lot of people – regardless of car use It is time to integrate elements of car-free housing into “normal/ everyday” planning and development It will have positive effects on mobility patterns!
It’s just a small step Stellwerk 60 could also be a “normal” development – just covering different modes of transport Car Parkcovering standard capacity
Measures for future planning Good design of public space and carfree streets/paths inside Adequate number of good bicycle parking facilities (including space for trailers and special bikes) Concentrated car parking on the edge(s) Mobility station Integration of car sharing Integration of public transport (special offers) Information on mobility options before moving in (soft measures) Nothing new, but too rarely considered
Future standards (?) Mobility management for urban planning and housing development as standard practice High attention to pedestrians and cyclists needs Good access to public transport and car-sharing(from start on) Cars as one but not dominant aspect (of public space design) Large(r) car-free areas Car parking:- Concentrated at the fringe- Mostly in garages and not in the public space- Full cost paid by users (residents and visitors)
