  1. UNEP Overview of Energy Projects in Africa CEMA, 31 August 2010

  2. UNEP Climate Change Strategy Specific Programmes/ Projects • Vulnerability and Impact Assessments for Adaptation • Adaptation Capacity, Policy and Planning Support • Support for building resilience of vulnerable ecosystems ADAPTATION • Integrated Analyses of GHG Mitigation Opportunities • Support for the deployment of energy-efficiency technologies • Stimulating private sector provision of clean energy goods and services MITIGATION REDD • REDD and AFOLU (Terrestrial Carbon) Readiness and Implementation Support Package CLIMATE CHANGE SCIENCE, COMMUNICATION & AWARENESS • Scientific support package for Global & national climate change information • Climate Negotiators Support Package • Climate Communication, Education and Outreach Package

  3. Energy Initiatives - Africa • African Carbon Asset Development Facility (ACAD) • The overriding goal is to establish a robust CDM market in Africa by creating CDM projects that are replicable in an African context • ACAD focuses on building capacity of the African financial sector to identify and appraise CDM opportunities • Financial sector training/outreach and developer one-on-one project clinics are integral components of the programme • Supports African carbon projects through a combination of technical assistance, grants and access to private sector finance ** KENYA: Lake Turkana Wind Power Project (Kenya) – ACAD provided partial payment for validation costs under the CDM ** NIGERIA: The Lagos Waste Management Authority in Nigeria is developing several waste-to-energy sites. ACAD is supporting the costs of engineering and carbon auditing studies required to earn carbon credits ** SOUTH AFRICA : Cogen project

  4. Energy Initiatives - Africa Renewable Energy Enterprise Development – Seed Capital Assistance Facility (REED-SCAF) • With African Development Bank(AfDB) and ADB • Executed by UNEP - DTIE • Support and access to start-up capital for Renewable Energy Development • Most developing countries in Africa and Asia; • GEF support USD 4 mio; • 6 years, 2mt CO2 reductions/20 years & USD 67 m seed capital; • http://www.scaf-energy.org

  5. Energy Initiatives - Africa SWERA: Solar & Wind Energy Resource Assessment • African Countries - Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya • High resolution Solar & Wind Maps; • Software for feasibility studies – RETSCREEN etc.; • Website:http:// swera.unep.net

  6. Energy Initiatives - Africa Greening the Tea Industry in East Africa • Private Sector; • Joint implementation with AfDB (African Development Bank); • Executed by the EATTA (East African Tea Trade Association); • GEF support US$ 2.85 mio • 4 years, 6 small hydro power plants; • Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Malawi; • Some with R.E. component; • http://greeningtea.unep.org (no “www” prefix!)

  7. Energy Initiatives - Africa Cogen for Africa: • Joint implementation with AfDB • Private Sector (Agro Processing) • Executed by AFREPREN (African Energy Policy Research Network) • GEF supported US$ 5.25 • 6 years, >20 mw of Cogen developed; • Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Swaziland, Sudan; • R.E. component possible • http://cogen.unep.org (no “www” prefix)

  8. Energy Initiatives - Africa CASCADE • Carbon finance in the bioenergy and finance sectors • Types of CDM projects supported • 3 MW gasification plant in Kandi, North Benin building and operation of a 3 MW biomass-fuelled power plant to provide electricity to the local rural populations, enabling job creation in the area. • Bio fules Mali biodiesel fuel for use in local installations that currently rely on conventional diesel fuel. It specifically targets machines used by local mills and the local electricity production company. This renewable fuel will be produced using seeds from smallscale jatropha curcas plantations created as part of the project.

  9. Energy Initiatives - Africa Africa Rural Energy Enterprise Development - Start up financing - enterprise development services to clean energy enterprises Examples: energy-efficient cookstoves; LPG distribution; solar energy products and services Ghana, Senegal, Mali, Zambia, Tanzania

  10. Energy Projects - Africa African Rift Geothermal Development Facility (ARGeo) (Rift Valley) • Use seed money provided by GEF, UNEP and a host of private/public sector investors to expand drilling sites up and down the Rift Valley • Also help encourage private investments from other countries
