MAKING NEW FOOTPRINTS through CLINCIAN BASED RESEARCH STEPPING BEYOND THE SANDPIT TO BRING ABOUT CHANGE Judy Coates – Physiotherapist Sarah Massey – Paediatric Rehabilitation Coordinator
INTRODUCTION • COMMONALITIES OF OUR PERSONAL SANDPIT – clinical experiences, research understandings, expectations • EXISTING FOOTPRINTS – what does the literature say? • OUTSIDE THE SANDPIT – experiences and impacts of “doing research”
COMMON FOOTPRINTS • Clinical backgrounds • Clinical interests • Career paths
FOOTPRINTS IN THE LITERATURE • AH professionals rate themselves as having little research experience, but moderate interest. • Experience leads to interest • Clinical/academic partnerships enhance effective research and quality care
EXPLORING THE MOVE BEYOND OUR SANDPIT • Questionnaire • Explored individual sandpits • Analysed our responses • Identified themes common to our individual sandpits • Outline recommendations for entering research world.
GOING BEYOND THE SANDPIT MAKING NEW FOOTPRINTS THROUGH RESEARCH INVOLVES: • Building relationships and partnerships • Clinician led research supported by academics
GOING BEYOND THE SANDPIT • Barriers and challenges • Enablers • Skills learnt • Benefits
1. BARRIERS & CHALLENGES a) To commencing research • “Real” work versus research • Self efficacy – “can I do this?” • Balancing worlds • Guilt • Leaving the clinician at the door
1. BARRIERS & CHALLENGES b) To implementing new ideas & skills into clinical practice • Time constraints • Rural location • Effecting change in a “slow to • change” system
2. ENABLERS • Structured framework including allocated time & financial support • Mentoring • Collaborative learning space • Critical companionship
3. SKILLS LEARNT • Reflective journaling • Critical thinking and reviewing • Critical appraisal of the literature • Documentation and writing skills • “DIG DEEPER” and then SIEVE
4. BENEFITS • Refreshed and reinvigorated career • Increased awareness of ‘world view’ of others • Increased confidence • Enhanced understanding of clinical data
WHY GO BEYOND YOUR SANDPIT? • To make new footprints in the sand • Learn new skills • Contribute to evidence-based practice • Re-ignite professional passion
ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS • From the clinical world - HNELHD and Line Managers, and colleagues for their interest • From the research world - mentors including Karin Fisher Tony Smith and Anne Croker, journal club and writers group colleagues and fellow RDP, Joy Harrison.
