  1. Colloque Aérotechnique 2010: Innovations et perspectivesSimulation in Maintenance Training Richard Di Ioia, eng, MBA (richd@cae.com)

  2. Agenda • Simulation in Maintenance training • Virtual Maintenance Trainer (VMT) tool • Using Simulation in a classroom • Other simulation tools • Questions • Demo usage of the VMT

  3. “We can expect to see the spoken and written word, our dominant modes of sharing today, eclipsedin many instances by … simulations and augmented realities. . . . Simulation enables us to learn much more rapidly and effectively than we might through conventional means of training.” Hodgins, H.W. (2000). Into the Future: A Vision Paper. Produced for the Commission on Technology and Adult Learning co-sponsored by ASTD and the National Governors Association.

  4. Aircraft Technology Evolution • Aircraft Technology has changed over the last century but most dramatically in recent years • Shouldn’t it follow that the way we train should keep pace?

  5. Training Technology Evolution Traditional Training Two step approach • Knowledge, using chalk and talk, w/ minimal media • Skills, typically on higher end devices or the A/C Training in Virtual Environments: • Integrate knowledge and Skills throughout the curriculum greatly improving retention • Use simulated environments to transfer some of the training to easily accessible & cost effective devices • Make available anywhere/anytime

  6. Training philosophy/methodology • The major goal of using simulation in Technical Training/Operations is to: • Improve effectiveness of training & operational environment • Generate more proficient mechanics….more quickly • Virtual Operational maintenance environment allows absorption of advanced troubleshooting skills • Simplify deployment logistics and increase throughput • Decrease training and operating costs

  7. Simulation Based Solution • Made available because of advancements in computer & Intranet/Internet technology • Based on the same high fidelity simulation software as in full flight & maintenance simulators: • Simulation replicates the functionality of an airplane. • Based on A/C data. • All components simulated and integrated together accurately. • H/W components replaced with graphical equivalent

  8. Cockpit Simulation Based Solution • Virtual Maintenance Trainer (VMT) • Solution includes: • Aircraft display system • Aircraft panels • Circuit breakers • Animated system schematics • Component location & manipulation • Cockpit initiated BITE • In situ, LRU Front Panel BITE • Extensive Malfunction Library • Simulation controls • High Fidelity System Simulations • Test Equipment Integration Active Schematics Airplane Walk around Courseware

  9. Sample Technical Training class

  10. PowerPoint Course One click solution preferable for all media HTML Other Material (Maintenance Manuals) Instructor Led Media

  11. Instructor Led Media • Easy to use classroom media control • Controls multiple screens • Controls multiple media • PDF, DOC, etc… • Simulation setups, layouts, faults, etc. • Movie clips • Easy to build • QA for classroom delivery • Mirrors training plan

  12. Virtual Instructor

  13. Classroom Control / Deployable Classroom • Can give tasks and monitor student’s progress at distance • Can quickly assess classroom knowledge, strength and weaknesses through small real-time monitored quizzes • Thus providing the mean to adapt the training to the class • Can control what the student sees and when • Promote interaction between instructor and students • Instructor can take control of student’s computer • Instructor can allow students, from their own desk, to use applications (e.g VMT) hosted on their computer.

  14. Practice & Troubleshooting Tools • Access to simulation in full freeplay or in different states (IAT- Instructional Aid Tool) • Locally, intranet, internet or via LMS • Training & Operational uses: • Refresher for students and instructors • Environment to check out normal & abnormal system operation (in lieu of actual a/c) • Medium for troubleshooting exercises or actual problems on an a/c (accelerate diagnostics)

  15. Virtual Test Equipment

  16. Practical Troubleshooting Tool

  17. Practical Assessment Tool (PAT) The Practical Assessment Tool provides an environment that allows: • Instructors to set scenario’s directing student’s to locate components, • Instructor to set scenario’s that determine which components will be serviceable/unserviceable, • Users to locate aircraft system components, • Users to identify serviceable and unserviceable components or conditions, • Testing of Student’s ability to locate a component, • Testing of Student’s ability to identify unserviceable components or conditions, • Testing of Student’s ability to follow a prescribed procedure, • Tool is web enabled and communicates with an LMS such that student’s results are tracked. • Ideal for EASA/TC practical testing

  18. Learning Management System (LMS) • Student access through login/password: • Enrolled courses available • Ability to begin where you left off in a previous session • Manager capability to: • Enroll students in courses • monitor student progress

  19. The Simulation Advantage for Maintenance Provides an integrated training environment facilitating student comprehension and retention of systems functionality by mixing knowledge & operation up-front • Allows students, via instructor (real or virtual), to reproduce realistically line-Oriented Scenarios and to troubleshoot them before ever being exposed to them on the real aircraft. (reducing down-times, no of no fault-found, shorter OJT). • Accelerates A/C diagnostics in line operations (reducing down-times, no fault-found) • Provides a solution that is easily accessible/portable/flexible • Allows for shorter down times for the student and possible reduced T&L • Allows for shorter apprenticeship periods Simulation can improve the proficiency of mechanics, reduce training, and increase throughput
