Surmount – (v.) to overcome, rise above Synonyms – conquer, triumph over Antonyms – succumb to, be vanquished, be defeated
Terminate – (v.) To bring to an end Synonyms - conclude, finish, discontinue Antonyms – begin, commence, initiate
Do Now What do you think it means when someone refers to “tone” and “voice” in your writing? Explain your answer.
Tone • Tone - manner in which the author expresses their attitude - can be detected by the words used - adjectives are helpful in establishing a tone EX: Think of the parent that says don’t get that tone (attitude) with me
Voice • Voice - it is the way your writing sounds on the page - it includes the words used, the way they are used - develops a “tone” in your writing EX: You need to take out the garbage vs. When you have a chance, can you take out the garbage?
Tone, Voice, and Persuasion • Together very important aspects of writing • Includes the words and general tone - like different music (angry, happy, etc…) • Using the wrong voice and tone - leads to an opinionated audience - will not be effective in persuading people • Use positive words to persuade rather than negative words
Peer Review • Evaluate the completed rough draft - find errors with grammar, spelling, and facts • Evaluate the “tone” and “voice” - does it use positive language - does it give “attitude” • Make suggestions to improve it - stating, “this is great” doesn’t help the author
