Mrs. Murphy’s Class Language Arts Routines
Welcome to Language Arts! Today we are going to practice our daily routines in language arts. During this time, we will work together as a whole class, and also work in smaller groups.
Whole Group Time For the first 15 minutes of language arts time, we will have whole group time. During this time, we will work together to practice our skill for the week. • You might take notes • I might read a short story to the class • You might talk with your table groups about the topic
Small Group Time For the next part of language arts time, I will meet with three small groups. We will use the following rotation schedule to make sure everyone is on track. This schedule is on the back board.
What am I supposed to do when I’m not meeting with the teacher? Independent Seatwork: This activity or assignment will be written on the large schedule on the board or underneath it. This will be related to what we discuss in small group. You must work on this by yourself and always do your best! Center Time: This activity will be located in the “Center” section of the room. This will be related to our skill or story for the week.
What will we do when we meet with the teacher? When I meet with a group, we will work on vocabulary, different reading skills, and comprehension strategies. I will let you know ahead of time if you need to bring anything with you to small group.
How do I know which group I’m in? I will always tell you who’s in which group. The groups will not always stay the same, so if there is a change, I will always let you know.
How long is each rotation? Each rotation will be about 15 minutes. If we do not finish our task during that time, we will simply pick up where we left off the next day.
D.E.A.R. When all three rotations are done, every student will participate in D.E.A.R. (Drop Everything And Read) You have all worked hard and deserve a break! For the last few minutes of class, every student will read a book of their choosing. This can be a book from the Media center, our classroom library, or from your house.
