Mission & Values • Mission Statement • To create life impacting experiences that enable young people to know and to grow in their relationship with Jesus Christ. • Core Values • We are about Jesus and his message • We are about children, teens, and young adults • We think “lost” and “how can we reach them?” • We are committed to being relevant, having personal loving and caring relationships and exceeding expectations
In the Beginning • Enoch Olsen original founder and director • Started a camp on Rainbow Lake in Trufant with The Five Free Evangelical Churches of Michigan • Outgrew that site found property in Evart Michigan • Was a Shetland pony farm • 515 acres • Bought from Pearl Decker after husband Collie died • Mr. Decker had a dream to start a boys camp with the 515 acres • Mrs. Decker sold the land to Spring Hill to fulfill his dream (Spring Hill, 2012)
Overview • Non-profit Christian Camp and retreat ministry • Destinations in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Kentucky, Ohio, and Wisconsin • Established in 1969 with 256 campers • Now serves 50,000 annually • Over 800 staff and 1000s of volunteers • Medical staff • Counselors • Will meets the physical, medical, and spiritual needs of any child • All children welcome • All children are created the way GOD wanted them to be (Spring Hill, 2012)
Evart Michigan • Nearly 800 acres • Three different frontiers with differing age groups • Storybrook (grades 1-3) • Copper Country (grades 4-6) • New Frontiers (grades 6-9) • Teen service teams and base camp (grades 9-12) • Camp along with community service • Offers summer camps, day camps, retreats, and winter camps • Averages 600 children a week • Scholarships available • Price averages $100/day
Medical staff • One physician or nurse oversees the activities of three different infirmaries at Spring Hill in Evart Michigan • Clinics run by medical students, nursing students, and PA students • Dispense medications • Triage • Simple medical needs • Ice • Ace bandages • Elimination Needs • Clinics staffed 24 hours a day • Emergencies transferred to local hospital
What is Service Learning? • Service Learning is an educational technique where the student does a form of community service, reflects on that community service, and writes about what he or she has learned from the experience (Missouri State, 2006). • A service learning project must be volunteer work outside of normal employment (Teschendorf, 2012).
Our volunteer experience • Summer 2012 • Intake • Met with parents to document medical needs of the children (6 hours) • Oversaw medical clinics for the weekend (50 hours) • On call for 3 clinics • Performed basic medical needs • Dispensed medications • Triage • Summer 2013 • Fundraising activities for medical services (10 hours) • Canoeing safety instructor/ Lifeguard (8 hours) • Aquatic safety for slides and pools (5 hours)

BSn Outcomes • Collaborative Leadership Provide collaborative leadership roles in the provision, delegation and supervision of nursing care while retaining accountability for patient safety and the quality of that care. • Supervising the non licensed medical staff • Three frontier infirmaries • Intake • Medication/Medical history • Periodic rounds on infirmaries/activities • Quality care provided to ensure the safety of all campers/volunteers. • We provided a mentoring environment for the staff who are seeking careers in the future of healthcare.
