  1. Good Afternoon! Please take out your journals & Science books.

  2. Act. 15 • Make sure all 3 families and elements are copied in your journals. • Example: Alkali Metals • Group 1 Periodic Table • Very reactive silvery white metals • Produce a strong corrosive solution • Li-Lithium, Na-Sodium,K-Pottasium, Rb-Rubidium, Cs-Cesium, Fr-Fracium

  3. Families • Halogens - summary List the elements • Noble Gases • Alkaline Earth Metals

  4. Take out Journals & Books • Open up to Act. 16

  5. Act. 16: Elements & the Periodic Table • Date: 12/3/113 • Challenge Question: • Getting Started: What is the periodic table? • A table of different elements that are placed in families.

  6. Introduction pg. B-22 • Glossary • 1. Atom- tiny particles • 2. React- Combine Chemically • 3. Reactive-Chemicals that react • 4. Compounds- when substances are formed ex:

  7. Discovering Elements • STT#1 • 1. Greek philosophers were right that fire, earth, air, and water weren’t basic building blocks of matter. • 2. Greek philosophers were wrong because they thought fire, air, water, and earth made everything.

  8. Discovering Elements • Stopping to Think #1 • 1. The ancient Greek Philosophers were right about the elements because they thought fire, water, air, and earth combined to make everything in the world. • 2. The philosophers were wrong because those were not the only elements that existed. 63 elements were created such as: H, N, O, Na-sodium, Al-Aluminum

  9. Title of Section • Write a detailed summary of section • Then answer stopping to think questions

  10. Mendeleev and the Periodic Table of the Elements • Stopping to Think 2 • 1. Mendeleev built on other scientists work by taking the 63 elements and creating a table to make into families of elements. • 2. other scientists built on Mendeleevs work by following his table and created the official Periodic table of elements.

  11. The Modern Periodic Table • Stopping to Think 3 Li (Lithium) - Alkali Metal C(Carbon)- S(Sulfur)- Ca(Calcium)- Ti(Titanium)- Br(Bromine)-

  12. Reactivity • 2 far left columns- (most reactive) • Noble Gases- right columns (least reactive) • Halogen Family column 17- (most reactive nonmetals) • Middle columns (somewhat reactive)

  13. Stopping to think 4 • Magnesium • What is the chemical symbol- MG • What family does it belong to- • Alkaline Earth Metals • Is it a solid, liquid, or gas- • Magnesium would be very reactive since it falls under column 2

  14. Molecules- more than 1 atom held together by a chemical bond • Example- Draw the yellow box on pg. B-28 • Water Molecule= H2O= Chemical Formula

  15. Stopping to Think 5 • The two ways that compounds are different from the elements that form them are the physical properties-size, shape, texture, height, and the chemical property which is the reaction.

  16. Chemical Formula-(put in glossary defintion) • Example: NaCl- Sodium Chloride (table salt)

  17. Stopping to Think 6 • Chemical Formula for Baking Soda NaHCO₃ • What are the elements used in the formula? • How many of each kind of atom is represented by the formula for baking soda?

  18. Classifying Matter: Elements, Compounds, and Mixtures • Give an example of a compound and mixture • Copy down the table for Analysis #1 and complete it in your science journal

  19. Chemical Formulas of Common Substances

  20. Homework • Analysis #2 -4 complete in your journal • Create or bring in a food label that has at least 2 elements from the periodic table. Circle or highlight the elements in the food and write the symbol for the elements. Extra Credit Due by Thursday 11/29/12 • Find out how many elements were added to the periodic table and write the symbol, element name, and mass of each element. Name of resource • - memorize at least 15 elements and know the symbols Be able to orally present them to me.

  21. Good Morning! • Have out your journals and books open to Act. 16 • Take out your graphic organizer paper from the Science World Article. • Also take out your food labels, make sure your name is on them.

  22. Finish the article • Make sure you complete the graphic organizer for the article Name that Element. • Also answer the Chemistry IQ questions.

  23. Chemistry IQ • 1. Manganese-atomic #= • Silver=47 • Copper =29 • Gold=79 • Aluminum=13 • 2. A-Ca-Calcium • 3. Fe(Iron) Transition Metals Periods=rows • 4. O 5. B.Cobalt groups= columns

  24. Atomic Number • Equals= Protons (+) and Electrons (-) Atomic Mass Equals number of protons (+) and neutrons (no charge, uncharged/neutral)

  25. Element Card • Atomic # • Symbol • Name • Atomic mass • Property:solid, liquid, gas • Family: • Reactivity:

  26. Anatomy of an Element • Copy down the box in your journal Make sure you understand how to find protons, electrons, and neutrons

  27. Periodic Table extra practice • Write the symbol down for each element • Atomic Mass round to whole number • Atomic Number • You can find out both to make it easier. • How many Protons? • How many Electrons # 5-10 Find out both protons and electrons for both
