  7. 1.2 The End of the Roman Empire in the West • Political Instability- Rome did not know how to peacefully transfer political power to new leaders • Economic & Social problems-Citizens had to pay heavy taxes to fund the army which drove many into poverty. • Weakening Frontiers- The empire was large, therefore, difficult to defend.
