Petals by Amy Lowell
Life is a streamOn which we strewPetal by petal the flower of our heart;
The end lost in dream,They float past our view,We watch their glad, early start.
Freighted with hope,Crimsoned with joy,We scatter the opening rose;
Their widening scope,Their distant employ,We never shall know. And the stream as it flows
Sweeps them away, Each one is goneEver beyond into infinite ways.
We alone stayWhile years hurry on,The flower fared forth, though its fragrance still stays.
Lowell shows the connection between flower petals and human relationships.
On which we strew Strew – litter, fill, cover, mess up
Freighted with hope, Freighted – goods carried by a vessel, a burden, a load
We scatter the opening rose; Scatter – to distribute loosely by or as if by sprinkling
Their distant employ, Employ – put to work; to put to use or service
Each one is goneEver beyond into infinite ways. Infinite – no boundaries or limits
The flower fared forth, though its fragrance still stays. Fared – to get along; to happen
