In Class Practice • AP students will practice developing writing skills with timed exercises • Writing Samples will be kept in a 3 ring binder in CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER • These samples will provide evidence of each student’s progress

Writing the Thesis Statement • (UNC Chapel Hill writing tips) The Thesis: • tells the reader how you will interpret the significance of the subject matter under discussion • is a road map for the essay/response • directly answers the question asked of you • a single sentence that presents your argument to the reader
STRONG vs. Weak Thesis • Ask yourself, “Self……” • Do I answer the question? • Have I taken a position that others might challenge or oppose? • Does my thesis pass the 'So What?/Rocks are Hard” test
STRONG vs. Weak Thesis • Example: “Compare and contrast the reasons why the North and South fought the Civil War.”
STRONG vs. Weak Thesis • “The North and South fought the Civil War for many reasons, some of which were the same and some different.”
STRONG vs. Weak Thesis • THAT thesis stinks because it • restates the question without providing any additional information. • "What reasons? How are they the same? How are they different?" • What can you do to make it BETTER?
