PARENTAL RELATIONSHIPS • Teens striving for greater freedom; results in more arguing with parents • Teens maintain that personal choices should be made by them • Quest for Independence: less time spent with family & greater emotional attachment to non-family members • Continue to share same broader views (politics, religion)
Although teens become independent of their parents as they grow older, they nevertheless relate to their parents on a number of things, including religiosity and career choices. Peer approval and relationships are also very important. Parent and Peer Influence
PEER RELATIONSHIPS • Most frequent providers of emotional and social support • Cliques: peer groups of 5 to 10 people; join for stability and a sense of belonging • Crowds: larger group of several cliques • Peer Influence: dress, hairstyles, speech • Peer pressure peaks at age 15 and decreases after age 17
