  2. 3.SSS.D Look at the picture below. Imagine that you are the man behind the counter at this soda shop. How would you run your business? What steps would you take to make sure that your business earned a profit?

  3. 3.SSS.D Every winter, people line the streets in New Orleans, Louisiana, for Mardi Gras. People dress in colorful costumes, ride on colorful floats, and throw coins and beads to crowds. Every spring, Chinese New Year is celebrated with a parade. The parade has many floats. It also features a dancing dragon made of bamboo and rattan. Give one example of how these celebrations are alike, and give one example of how these celebrations are different.

  4. 3.SSS.D Scoops Ice Cream Parlor needs to make more money. It sells ice cream for $1 a scoop. It buys hot fudge sauce from another company. This is one of their expenses. Describe how Scoops Ice Cream Parlor could earn more money to increase its profit.

  5. 4.SSS.D Conservation is the careful use of a natural resource. Many Ohioans are protecting animals by saving the places they live to prevent the animals from becoming extinct. For example, to help the bald eagles in Ohio, people are working to protect the eagles’ nesting areas. What is one possible disadvantage of preserving the nesting areas of animals? What can be done?

  6. 4.SSS.D A rare bird just built its nest on a fence near a busy local road. To protect the bird, the mayor is thinking about closing this section of the road for six months. List one advantage and one disadvantage of this solution.

  7. 5.SSS.D Land developers are going to build a new shopping mall in an area of town that used to be a community park. The park was used by everyone for picnics, fireworks displays, and outdoor games. The developers have promised to build a new playground for the local school to replace the park. Explain whether building a new school playground is an effective solution to the community’s problem of losing its park.

  8. 5.SSS.D The United States has a federal system. This means that power is divided between the national government and state governments. The national government makes laws for the whole country, and it works to keep the nation safe. The state governments take care of education and health care. In the United States, the national and state governments also share some powers, such as collecting taxes. What roles of the national government could state governments do? How would this effect the United States?

  9. 4.SSS.D An new coal mine has just been discovered in part of Ohio. Many people in the nearby town are excited because opening the mine could lead to more jobs. Other people are afraid the mine will ruin the environment. Explain how the mayor of the town could arrive at a solution that would make both groups of people happy.

  10. 5.SSS.D Canada has many trade partners, including the United States, China, France, Germany, and Mexico. The main exports are cars and car parts. Other important exports are chemicals and machinery. Canada also exports lumber, natural gas, oil, and wheat. Unlike the United States, Canada earns more money from its exports than it spends on its imports. How could Canada continue to earn money if they were not able to export cars and car parts?
