  1. Origin of the Universe Earth and Life Science Grade 11

  2. Origin of the Universe Big Bang Theory • The cosmological theory that all matter and energy in the universe originated from a state of enormous density and temperature that exploded at a finite moment in the past when space and time came into being. (A dictionary of Science 6th Edition)

  3. Origin of the Solar System Nebular Theory • States that the bodies of our solar system evolved from an enormous rotating cloud called solar nebula

  4. Solar Nebula • Made up of Hydrogen and Helium atoms • Microscopic dust grains and ejected matter of long-dead stars • Nuclear fusion in stars convert hydrogen and helium into other elements found in the universe

  5. 5 Billion Years Ago • Clouds of gases and heavier elements • Slowly contract due to gravitational force among its particles • Spiralling nebula contracts and rotates faster • Inward pull of the gravity came into balance • Vast cloud has assumed a flat disk shape • Protosun - center

  6. Gravitational energy was converted to thermal energy • High temperature – dust grains broke up into molecules and atomic particles • Distance beyond Mars – Low temperature and has thick layer of ice • Formation of the sun – end of the period of contracting

  7. Temperature in the inner planets began to decline • Substances with high melting points began to coalesce(join together) • Iron, nickel and elements of rocks – silicon, sodium, calcium formed metallic and rocky clumps that orbit the sun • Inner planets – high temperature • Outer planets – low temperature (ice)
