  1. 3.4 Solving Multi-Step Equations

  2. Reverse the usual order of operations! • Examples: • 5x + 3 = 23 Subtract 3 first - 3 -3 5x = 20 Divide by 5 5 5 x = 4

  3. Example; • x - 10 = 18 Add 10 to both sides + 10 +10 x = 28 Multiply by the reciprocal (both sides) · x = 28 · x = = 42!!!!!!

  4. Example: • 4m + 8 = 10 Get rid of fraction by multiplying by -2 -2 -2 · 4m + 8 = 10 · -2 -2 4m + 8 = -20 Subtract 8 from both sides -8 -8 4m = -28 Divide by 4 on both sides 4 4

  5. Answer: • m = -7 !!!!!

  6. Writing Multi-Step equations! • Example: eight more than 5 times a number is negative 62 8 + 5x = -62 Subtract 8 from both sides -8 -8 5x = -70 Divide 5 from both sides 5 5 x = -14

  7. Example: • Find 3 consecutive integers whose sum is 57: x + (x + 1) + ( x + 2) = 57 3x + 3 = 57 Subtract 3 from both sides -3 -3 3x = 54 Divide 3 from both sides 3 3 x = 18
