Franklin Roosevelt • 1882-1945 • Married to Eleanor Roosevelt • Elected President 4 Times (died during his fourth term) • Oversaw U.S. involvement in the Great Depression and World War Two • Through both, drastically and rapidly expanded the power of the United States government. • Shifted American politics to the left considerably and redefined liberalism in the United States

Roosevelt’s Approach to Solving The Great Depression: The New Deal • A variety of programs designed to give relief, recovery, and reform to the Great Depression • Relief: Jobs for the Unemployed • Recovery: Economic Growth • Reform: Regulation of Wall Street, banks, and transportation • 1933-1936 • Firmly solidifies the ideological divide budding between the Republicans and Democrats by making the democrats the party of government intervention • Helps shift public support towards the democratic party
