  3. Paleozoic Era: 543 to 248 mya All Life in the ocean First vertebrates, reptiles, ferns, insects. Mesozoic Era: 248 to 65 mya – Small mammals, birds, flowering plants, dinosaurs Mass extinction! Cenozoic Era: 65 mya to present – all modern animals, human beings Phanerozoic Eon : (543 mya to present)
