INTRODUCTION Bill Cosby was born on July 12,1937 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is known as an American comedian, actor, author, television producer, educator, musician and activist. Cosby has also acted in a number of films. During the 1980s, Cosby produced and starred in what is considered to be one of the decade's defining sitcoms, TheCosbyShow, which aired eight seasons from 1984 to 1992.
BILL COSBY’S EARLY LIFE Cosby was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He is one of four sons born to Anna Pearl, and William Henry Cosby, Sr. During much of his early childhood, Cosby's father was away in the U.S. armed forces and spent several years fighting in World War II. As a student, Cosby described himself as a class clown, he enjoyed making his friends laugh. Cosby was the captain of the baseball and track and field team at Mary Channing Wister Elementary School in Philadelphia, as well as the class president. Cosby attended Fitz Simmons Junior High where he began acting in plays; and continued his devotion to playing sports.

Cosby’s busy schedule of sports made it difficult to manage his school work; in addition to working before and after school to support the family. Cosby transferred to Germantown High School, were het failed the tenth grade and went on to be an apprentice at a shoe repair shop. Wanting more out of life Cosby joined the Navy, serving at the Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, Naval Station Argentina, Newfoundland and at the Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland.
While serving in the Navy Cosby worked with seriously injured Korean War casualties. He realized the need for an education, and finished his equivalency diploma via correspondence courses. Cosby loved humour, while completing his undergraduate studies, continued to work on his talent. There, he appeared in the Gaslight Café in 1962 with a stand up comedy act. Cosby pursued a variety of additional television projects and appeared as a regular guest host on The Tonight Show and as the star of an annual special for NBC.
FAT ALBERT & THE COSBY KIDS Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids is an animated series created, produced, and hosted by Bill Cosby, The show premiered in 1972 and ran until 1985. The show, based on Bill Cosby's remembrances of his childhood gang, focused on the lovable, oversized Albert, with his signature rumbling exclamation "Hey hey hey!", and his friends.
Fat Albert primarily spoke to African-American youth in low-income families, a segment of the population previously ignored by Saturday morning programming; however it was viewed by all children across America. The show always had an educational lesson emphasized by Cosby's live-action cameos, and the gang always gathered in their North Philadelphia junkyard to play a rock song on their cobbled-together instruments. Cosby's Kids had an upbeat attitude and were eager to learn, in spite of their apparent poverty.
The Cosby Show first aired on September 20, 1984 and ran for eight seasons on the NBC television network. The show focuses on the Huxtable family, an affluent African-American family living in Brooklyn, New York. According to TV Guide, the show "was TV's biggest hit in the 1980s, and almost single-handedly revived the sitcom genre and NBC's ratings fortunes". In 1996, he starred in a show called ‘Cosby’ where he played a character called Hilton Lucas.

GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS He has received a doctorate in Education from the University of Massachusetts, and is a best-selling author. He was also inducted into the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences hall of fame in 1994. One of his most notable accomplishments is that he was the first black performer to win an Emmy; he won it for his part in "I Spy." Along with all of these awards he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
