  2. Contents • The Role of the FMCA • The FMCA Aims & Objectives (Priority Areas) • Product Requirements • Convergence Launches • FMCA Vendor Affiliation Programme

  3. The Role of the FMCA • Formed in mid-2004. • Incorporated as a not-for-profit trade association under New York law, USA, in August 2006. • Global alliance of telecom operators focused on accelerating the development and availability of Convergence products and services. • 27 Leading integrated Telecom Operators = over 800 million subscribers (1 in 3 of the world’s telecom users) • Not a standards development organisation. • FMCA Vendor Affiliation Programme Launched in Sept 2006, with Applications as from early December. • Formal Liasion Agremeent with WFA as from February 2006.

  4. FMCA Aims & Objectives (Priority Programmes) • A key factor in enabling telecom operators to deploy Convergence services: • Common Operator Requirements for Converged products & services to work in any environment. • Ensuring availability of Converged Devices: • Specifying baseline specifications for Wi-Fi enabled devices. • Specifying Architecture & Interfaces for networks: • Seamless authentication and registration in a common, secure and consistent manner. • Defining procedures & interfaces for Interconnect: • Enabling services to be fully interoperable between multiple operators and across multiple networks. • Defining requirements for Converged Roaming: • Encouraging a global Converged wireless-cellular roaming service for telecom users.

  5. Scope of FMCA – Product Requirements Definitions (PRD) • Services: • Session/call services (voice, video and multimedia) • Messaging services (voice, text & multimedia) • Data services (Internet & Enterprise) • Content delivery and distribution services • FMC services (seamless & non-seamless) • Networks: • NGN, IMS & other IP-based networks • Wired, WiFi & WiMAX access networks • Devices: • WiFi and NGN handsets • PCs, PDAs and Media Players • Mobile-&-Wireless (FMC) handsets • Hubs for home & office customers

  10. FMCA WiFi SIP PRD - Network and Architecture Positioning Statement • FMCA PRD Release 2.0 and onwards assumes network architecture compliant with: • (i) 3GPP IMS (part of 3GPP Release 7) or 3GPP2 MMD and • (ii) 3GPP VCC between CS and IMS (including I-WLAN) (part of 3GPP Release 7) or 3GPP2 DTF and DRF • (iii) ETSI TISPAN NGN (Release 1 and 2). • Where early IMS deployments are delivered prior to the standardisation of above mentioned releases, these early implementations should align with previous IMS releases (3GPP Release 5 and 6) and may cover both IPv4 and IPv6. • These early IMS deployments shall continue to evolve to meet future network architecture requirements.

  11. Clear Deliverables Roadmap – Driving Convergence Requirements • Available from www.thefmca.com • Wi-Fi SIP PRD Release 2.0 May 2006 • Terms & Definitions • Service Capabilities • Technical Handset Requirements • Network Architecture Requirements • Access Point & Gateway Requirements • Wi-Fi GAN (UMA) PRD Release 2.0 May 2006 • Bluetooth CTP PRD Release 2.0 May 2006 • FMCA Priority Programmes: Deliverables expected throughout 2007. • Increased level of collaboration with wider industry to ensure to vision and roadmap alignment.

  13. FMCA Vendor Affiliation Programme (VAP) • Framework for vendors to contribute to the Alliance’s work in cooperation with the Alliance Members: • Delivery function within the FMCA Technical Working Group that identifies and addresses technical requirements. • A set of work procedures and frameworks built around the various Standards and Certification bodies. • Timely generation and delivery of Work Items that support the FMCA Priority Programmes: • Focus is on service, network and device interoperability requirements.

  14. FMCA & SDOs/Fora – Baseline for Success • The FMCA is not a Standards Development Organisation. • Focus is on the productisation of the Convergence Technologies. • Close collaboration with Standard, Specification & Certification Organisations to encourage consistency across product and equipment standards. Liaison Programmes: • 3GPP: Liaison Status reached in October 2005. • IEEE 802.11u: Liaison Status reached in September 2005. • IEEE 802.21: Liaison Status reached in March 2006. • Wi-Fi Alliance: Liaison Status reached in February 2006 • ETSI-TISPAN: aimed for end 2006 (FMCA already making contribution) • Home Gateway Initiative: aimed for end 2006.
