  1. Unit 1 A Review

  2. Estimation Definition: an approximation used for some purpose even if the input data is incomplete Proportions Fundamental Counting Principle

  3. Proportions If I know that 50 M&Ms fit in a container that is 10 inches cubed, how many M&Ms can I fit in my classroom that is 32 ft long, 26 ft wide, and 9 ft tall?

  4. Proportions First we must find the volume of my classroom in inches cubed – 32x26x9x123 ≈13,000,000 in3. Next we need to set up a proportion. = and solve for x.

  5. Fundamental Counting Principle A phone number in the form NYZ-ABC-XXXX has three sections: NYZ ABC XXXX area code exchange code station code If the exchange codes for Tulsa, Oklahoma are 761, 689 and 239, then how many phone numbers are available. (Note that all of the exchange codes have the same area code.)

  6. Fundamental Counting Principle For each of the three exchange codes, there can be 10x10x10x10 station code combinations. Therefore, there can be 3x10x10x10x10 = 30,000 phone numbers.

  7. Fundamental Counting Principle What if for the 761 exchange code the station code must start with a 1,2,3 or 4?

  8. Fundamental Counting Principle Then for the 761 exchange code, there are 4X10X10X10 possible combinations for the station code. (4,000) There are still 10x10x10x10 possible combi- nations for each of the 689 and 230 station codes. (20,000 total) 20,000 + 4,000 = 24,000 possible combinations
