  2. It’s because they don’t have any other choice. • Most crack dealers (foot soldiers) only get paid $3.30 an hour – below minimum wage. A few make $7 an hour. • The gang leader makes $8,500 as his monthly wage, making his annual salary about $100,000. • The top 20 bosses – the board of directors - earn about $500,000 annually. • 1/3 of the gang’s board of directors are typically imprisoned and foot soldiers have a 1 in 4 chance of being killed.

Why would anyone want to be a foot soldier in a gang? • “For the same reason a pretty Wisconsin farm girl moves to Hollywood and a high school quarterback wakes up at 5:00 AM to lift weights.” • They all want to succeed in an extremely competitive field in which, if you reach the top, you are paid a fortune.

  4. When comparing how a gang works organizationally to how a McDonalds works, they’re very similar. • A foot soldier from a typical gang and a burger flipper from McDonalds both hold minimum wage jobs if that.

  5. What does crack cocaine have in common with nylon stockings?

Whenever nylon stockings came out, countless American women felt the urge to buy them because they were easily affordable, immensely appealing, and practically addictive. • In the 1970’s if you were the person to do drugs, there is no classier drug than crack cocaine. • Heroin was droopy. • Pot was foggy. • “Cocaine was clean, white, and pretty. It provided a beautiful high.”
