The Tribune was started on Feb.2nd 1881 in Lahore as a weekly newspaper of 12 pages. • In 1886 it became biweekly, in 1898 it became tri-weekly and in 1906 it became a daily. • It was started by Sardar Dyal Singh Majithia – a great admirer Raja Ram Mohun Roy and Brahmo Samaj. • The aim of THE Tribune , as its name imports, fairly and temperately to advocate the cause of the masses. • The publication of The Tribune was welcome by the educated section of the community.

With the advent of The Indian National Congress in 1885 , The Tribune condemned the Partition of Bengal 1905. • The Editor – Kalinath Ray who was a writer, bravely faced the risk involving the fought against the government. • Even During the struggle for independence , The Tribune played a distinctive role as an exponent of public view. • The policy of the paper is to continue to be liberal in politics, secular in Outlook, balanced in and objective in reporting and temperate in language. • Religious controversies shall be avoided and attitude of strict neutrality shall be maintained.

  4. Tribunes' code for Journalist: • Members of the editorial staff shall not publish the matter which is obscene. • Every effort must be made to ensure that the news content is accurate , free from bias . • Member of the staff should perform their duties without fear and favor. • The tribune group launched two sister publications in Hindi and Punjabi- Danik tribune and Punjabi tribune in 1978.

  5. Under Prem bhatyia editorship in 1977 the paper required a new dimension, a modern face was given to the paper. There was a widecoverage of national regional and international events. Good presentations of news editorial interpretations of latest developments became the main part of the news paper.
