Physical activity and lower-back pain in persons with traumatic transfemoral amputation: A national cross-sectional survey Hemakumar Devan, MPhty; Steve Tumilty, PhD; Cath Smith, PhD
Aim • Investigate lower-back pain (LBP) prevalence and relationship between LBP and physical activity (PA) in a national sample of New Zealanders with traumatic transfemoral amputation (TFA). • Relevance • LBP is a common secondary condition following lower-limb amputation.
Method • Mailed questionnaires to random sample from New Zealand Artificial Limb Board national database (n = 322). • 55% response rate.
Results • 64.1% reported LBP. • 39.1% reported restricted PA due to LBP. • Equal distribution of persons with LBP in low, medium, and high PA groups. • However, persons with restricted PA due to LBP had lower PA scores than persons with LBP and no restricted PA. ADL = activities of daily living
Conclusion • LBP prevalence is found to be high (64%) in persons with traumatic TFA. • PA levels are not influenced by presence or absence of LBP. • Future studies investigating coping strategies and using objective PA measures are warranted.
