Human rights in Algeria By Nicole Wilson
No freedom of… • There is very little freedom of expression • Other issues include restrictions on freedom of movement, violence and discrimination against women, substandard prison conditions, prisoner abuse, absence of a fair judiciary, and limited workers' rights.
No freedom of movement • On March 25, border patrol stopped a few activists when they were on their way to the social forum • The forum was a global gathering of approximately 50,000 activists on areas such as human rights and the environment, runs from March 26 to March 30, 2013.
Discrimination • Discrimination based on birth, race, gender, and a number of other attributes is illegal, although women, in particular, face a considerably larger amount of discrimination.
Violence and discrimination against women • Algerian women are treated unfairly in Algeria, they have fewer rights than men. • Women are battered • Men break into the women’s houses and attack them.
Poor prison conditions • Overcrowding is a problem in Algerian prisons. • Poor lighting, ventilation, food, and hygiene are also a problem. • Prisoners are brutally and illegally tortured.
Conclusion • Algeria fails to follow the UDHR • Algeria declines to give people freedom, a fair judicial system, or decent or at least livable prison conditions
