What are Tier 2 Interventions? • Specialized, more intensive interventions • for supporting students • who have been documented as unresponsive to Tier 1 practices.
What are Their Essential Features? • They are designed to directly support Tier 1 programming • The process is similar for all students, but students will have individualized goals • They are easily accessible (within a few days of referral) • They are continuously available • They are team and data driven
How are Tier 2 Interventions Different from Tier 1? • Increased instruction/practice (expectations and related behaviors) • Increased monitoring • Increased positive reinforcement • Increased feedback • Increased pre-correction
What are the Prerequisites for Implementing Tier 2 Practices? • Your Tier 1 program is solidly in place • You have attained a score of 80% or better on the School-side Evaluation Tool (SET) • Your have obtained the commitments necessary to proceed
Who is Responsible for Implementing Tier Two Interventions? • The school’s Behavior Support Team, a sub-group of the SWPBS Leadership Team • Representative(s) from the SWPBS leadership team (often including the Coach) • A designated Tier 2 Coordinator • An administrator • Behavior specialists (social workers, school psychologists, counselors, special education staff) • Teacher(s)
What are the Roles of the Behavior Support Team? • Training and support to school staff • Providing specialized assessments, interventions, and supports • Meeting regularly • Developing screening and entry procedures • Ensuring evaluative data are collected • Developing exit procedures
How Do Students Qualify for Tier 2 Interventions? • By receiving a specified number of office discipline referrals (ODRs) • By failing to attend school for a specified number or percentage of days • By teacher nomination • By using other standardized measures of behavioral problems
How Long Do Tier 2 Interventions Last? • As long as they need to • Short-term for most students • Longer-term for others
What are Some Typical Tier 2 Interventions? • Check In/Check Out (CICO) • Behavioral contracting • Time Out in a “Buddy “ classroom • Home/school collaborative interventions • Small group/individual social skill training (focused on expectations) • Special homeroom
Tasks for Today • Action plan for the SET evaluation • Action plan to clarify/identify Behavior Support Team members (think about current groups) • Action plan to identify current and additional Tier 2 interventions • Action plan regarding referral process and criteria
