There are lots of Greek myths, gods, and legends. Too many to count, and certainly too many to put on a single PowerPoint. Therefore we have picked few of the most interesting characters and stories for your entertainment. This PowerPoint will contain the following characters: -Athena -Perseus -Theseus and the minotaur

The Birth of Athena - Athena is the daughter of Zeus & Metis - Metis told Zeus she was pregnant, and because of a prophecy, he turned her into a fly and swallowed her whole - One day, Zeus complained about a headache -Hephaestus split open his head, and Athena jumped out, wearing full battle armor
Stories of Athena • One day Athena caught Poseidon and Medusa fooling around in her temple. • Furious, she turned Medusa into a gorgon (and her sisters too, for no good reason) • Later she helped Perseus kill Medusa Story of her and Poseidon: -Cecrops was looking for a deity patron for his city -Athena and Poseidon were both interested - So they had a competition to see which deity could best win over the city and their king with the best present. - Poseidon struck the ground with his trident and presented the city with a salt water spring - Athena planted a seed into the ground that quickly grew into an olive tree - Athena won, and the city was renamed Athens Statue of Athena, in the Acropolis, Athens
Biography of Perseus • Born in Argos • Mother Danae and father Zeus (demigod) • Grew up on isle of Seriphos • Events that led to his birth: • 1. Acrisus received a prophecy, that his grandchild would kill him • 2. Locked his daughter Danae in a tower • 3. Zeus entered the tower as a ray of golden sunshine • 4. Perseus was born
-Acrisus, mad, threw the two into a boat and sent them out to sea. -Perseus and Danae washed up on the isle of Seriphos. -There he grew up. Seriphos This is where his most heroic quest began…
Perseus and Medusa During the wedding of king Polydectes, Perseus was challenged to get the head of medusa for a wedding gift when he arrived empty handed Athena and Apollo gave him equipment to kill medusa: -mirrored shield -sickle -winged sandals -Three nymphs also gave him a wallet and the cap of invisibility Medusa was one of three gorgons, with snakes for hair, bronze claws, and wings. One look of her and you turn to stone.
When he returned, he found Polydectes abusing Danae. Perseus turned Polydectes to stone. He kept the head of medusa for a while, then gave it to Athena. • Other adventures of Perseus: • Saving Andromeda after killing medusa, and later marrying her • Becoming king of Tiryns • Killing his grandfather Acrisus When he died, the gods placed him in the skies, along with Andromeda. He did have many descendants to carry on his name; the most notable of these was Heracles.
King Minos -very rich, very powerful king of Crete -had a beautiful daughter (Ariadne) -occasionally launched attacks on Athens The Bargain Athens made a bargain with Minos: he would no longer attack Athens, in exchange, 14 young men and women would be sent to Crete every 9 years.
Minos’s Minotaur The children sent to Crete would be used as food for the minotaur, half-man, half-bull, who lived in the labyrinth. Theseus, prince of Athens, didn’t want the children to die, and so volunteered to go with them, and kill the minotaur.
How Theseus killed the minotaur: When he arrived, Ariadne promised to help him, should he marry her later. He got a sword and a ball of yarn He entered the labyrinth He killed the minotaur after a long struggle He followed the yarn back out to the entrance He escaped Crete with the other Athenians and Ariadne.
-The gods answered her prayer -Theseus’ father had believed that his son had died at Crete -He jumped off the cliff at Athens and killed himself -Theseus mourned for a long time The voyage home: -stopped at the isle of Naxos -he left Ariadne on the island and sailed away -Ariadne prayed for revenge on Theseus
