  3. Book Club • Who: E2 and MS • Parents = Book Club Coach • 4th – 8th Graders • 4+ F&P Levels above • What: • Extra reading with discussion • 2 times per week • 45 minutes • 3-5 students per group

  4. Book Club • When: (tentative) • 9:30 – 10:15 • 2:30 – 3:15 • Any 2 days (consistently) • Where: • Depending on timeslot/day • Options • Library • Book Room • LLI Room • Room 114 • Recess Rooms

  5. Book Club • Why: • Offers authentic reading experiences for the most proficient readers • Allows for extra attention for other students • Catch-up struggling students • Progress those “at-level” to “above-level” • Creates a culture of literacy among the Suder community • Students • Parents • Staff

  6. Book Club • How: • Structure • Good literacy instruction • Strategies • Discussion • Consistency

  7. Book Club Structure • Activate Background Knowledge • Rereading • New Reading • Close

  8. Activating Background Knowledge • 7-10 Minutes • Recap what was read • Review plot points and character motivations • Summarize book or chapter(s) • Add any appropriate annotations • See Annotation Guide

  9. Rereading • 7-10 Minutes • Reread particular quotes, passages, or pages • Coach and/or student selected • Discuss importance • Add any appropriate annotations • See Annotation Guide

  10. New Reading • 20-25 minutes • Begin with Book Club Coach doing a Read-Aloud • Have students read aloud with the group • Have students finish reading silently • Make any new annotations • See Annotation Guide

  11. Closing • Recap what was read/discussed • Set number of pages to read for next time

  12. Activities • Discussion based • Read-Aloud • Think-Aloud

  13. Annotation Guide • Annotate with the students • Make annotations based off of discussion • Have students annotate on their own
