  2. Why Taiwan Needs ECFA • Questions asked about ECFA： 1. Upgrade the competitiveness of Taiwan export products？ 2. Move Taiwan to join regional economic integration？ 3. Support Taiwan to sign FTA with other nations? 4. Secure the rights of Taiwan businessmen？ 5. Promote the foreign direct investment？ 6. Assist famers to export agriculture & fishery products to China？ Answer is “YES”!!

ECFA makes cross-strait relations over the past few decades has at all time healthy. ECFA makes Taiwan more attractive to foreign investors. The United States is willing to strengthen economic cooperation with Taiwan by TIFA.

Europe : Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, Director General of Foreign Economic Relations, Van Schreven, and other officials are happy to see the two sides sign ECFA. Financial Times: Expect Taiwan would sign FTA with the United States, Japan, the European Union. 3. Japan : Economic News：After ECFA, time for Japan to sign FTA with Taiwan seems matured. It is a revelation to the stagnant Japanese FTA strategy. Sankei Shimbun: Japan and the United States should expedite the negotiation of FTA with Taiwan.

Philippines： Business News: Professor Edgardo Dagdag, Center for Asian Studies of University of the Philippines calls upon the Philippine government to sign FTA with Taiwan, to serve as a complementary for ASEAN free trade agreement 5. South Korea： “South Korea International Trade Association,“ quoted from South Korea News that Seoul and Beijing should speed up to sign FTA to offset "significant damage.“ caused by ECFA 6. Singapore： It is a good development that the mainland China is willing to pragmatically deal with Taiwan by signing ECFA. 7. India： India Times: Taiwan hopes to sign ECFA to boost the economy. It will also contribute to the signing of FTA with the United States, Japan and other countries.

  12. Strengthen Importance of U.S. – Taiwan Relations • U.S. is Taiwan 3rd largest export market；Taiwan is U.S. 10th largest trade partner. • U.S. can use Taiwan as a “gateway” to access China’s growing market. • ECFA makes Taiwan more attractive to U.S. investors.

Conclusion • ECFA draw the attention of the regional and global community to Taiwan and China’s new role in Asia pacific economy. • ECFA helps the two sides to complement each other to enhance competitiveness, and to bring well being to the people and achieve mutual beneficial goals. • As we prepare for the new era of ECFA, Taiwan still needs to focus on innovation, and adjusting industrial structure to build up a positive environment for business.
