ELD and IATUL – Collaborative Partnership Jay Bhatt IATUL liaison to ELDDrexel University
What is ELD? • Engineering Libraries Division of the American Society for Engineering Education. • 175 members; mostly academic engineering librarians. • Promotes the library as an integral part of engineering education. • Annual conference • interact with engineering faculty • learn about major issues and trends in engineering education • share experiences about librarianship
What is ASEE? • The American Society for Engineering Education is a nonprofit member association, founded in 1893, dedicated to promoting and improving engineering and technology education. • ASEE is more than 12,000 deans, professors, instructors, students and industry representatives. • ASEE: http://www.asee.org • ELD: http://www.englib.cornell.edu/eld/
ASEE ELD Liaisons Program • Increasing collaborative opportunities with related organizations • Improving and increasing the visibility of ELD and its activities, and vice versa • Improving awareness of issues and activities of importance to ELD or its members and communicating that information back to ELD
ASEE ELD Liaisons Program • I am both ELD liaison to IATUL and IATUL’s liaison to ELD • I will be taking IATUL’s ideas to ELD in Montreal in June
ELD Liaisons • ACRL/STS Association of College & Research Libraries, Science & Technology Section • ACS/Chem Info Division American Chemical Society, Chemical Information Division • ASIS&T American Society for Information Science & Technology
ELD Liaisons • IFLAInternational Federation of Library Associations, Science & Technology Section • Special Libraries Association • Engineering Division • Physics-Astronomy-Math Division • Science and Technology Division • SPARCScholarly Publishing & Academic Resources Coalition
ELD’s 24x7 Ref Task Force • Investigate possibilities and problems associated with establishing an international network of engineering libraries • Basic/core engineering reference services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week • IATUL participation welcomed
Scholarly Communication- • Kate Thomes (ELD SPARC Liaison) • Looking at such questions as: • How does scholarly communication function for engineers? • What does it provide? • Is there something in the culture of engineering that induces or inhibits participation in changing modes of scholarly communication? • Are there any online engineering repositories currently?
Scholarly Communication • Questions, continued: • What benefit would engineers derive from an online repository? • What changes other than online repositories might benefit engineering scholars? • As engineering librarians, what are our concerns/perspectives relative to engineering scholarly communication? • As engineering librarians, what is our role in facilitating changes? • How can IATUL members bring insight to this group?
Other ELD activities • JSTOR Task ForceInvestigating adding more engineering journals • Mentoring Task Force Facilitate mentoring activities among ELD members. One of the goals is to create a database of information experts. • Accreditation and Standards CommitteeInformation Literacy guidelines and standards for engineering
Other ELD activities • Literature Guides – Web based with potential links from Virtual libraries. For example, Selected Guide to the Literature on Industrial Ergonomics will be available soon. • Union List of Technical Reports, Standards and Patents in Engineering Libraries • ASEE ELD Web sitehttp://www.englib.cornell.edu/eld/ • Annual Conference
Opportunities for Collaboration Investigate other possibilities • International adaptation of information competencies for engineers • Virtual reference – 24x7 task force established. IATUL participation. Any ideas? • Engineering books online – international publishers scene • Engineering research modules • Electronic thesis and dissertations • Electronic journals • Other ideas
Opportunities for Collaboration • We have a lot in common • Communicate, Collaborate and Co-operate – 3cs for participation • ASEE ELD conference web sitehttp://www.englib.cornell.edu/eld/conf/montrealprogram02.html
