MDG-Relevant Statistics • Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) is the main institution that collects and compiles data in Turkey. • TurkStat provides a great deal of data regarding MDG indicators. • Other organizations which provide data; Ministry of National Education, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Environment and Forestry, Hacettepe University Institute of Population Studies, Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency, Information and Communication Technologies Authority
MDG-Relevant Statistics • Sources of MDG-relevant statistics: . Population and housing censuses, . Household surveys (Household Budget Survey and Household Labour Force Survey, DHS) . Administrative registers (population registers, hospital registers, students and graduates registers, etc.)
Strengthening National Coordination Mechanism Turkish Statistical Law • published in the Official Gazette on 18 November, 2005 and entered into force, • set out principles and standards regarding the production of official statistics, • improved the organizational structure of the TurkStat, • set out principles in the collection and evaluation of data and information, and production, publication and dissemination of statistics in the line of EU requirements,
Strengthening National Coordination Mechanism Turkish Statistical Law • set the ground for coordination among institutions and organizations involved in the statistical process in the Official Statistics Programme (OSP). OSP 2007-2011 • set the standards for official statistics, defined the accountable and relevant institutions, and clarified which data should be collected by which institution and by which particular method and period, when they should be published.
MDG-Relevant Statistics International Agencies That Data Is Sent To • EUROSTAT • UN Agencies (UNECE, UNDP, UNICEF, WHO, etc.) • IMF • OECD • World Bank • ILO, etc. Sending data or microdata by online or in tabular format/Sending indicators or figures and metadata.
Preparing the Country Report • State Planning Organization (SPO) is responsible for preparing the country report in coordination with related national agencies. Preparing the Country Report • Following the first report issued in 2005, Turkey’s Ninth Development Plan, covering the period 2007-2013, was prepared. In the process of drafting the plan, the aim of achieving the MDGs was taken into consideration, and Turkey’s development goals were designed in line with MDG targets. • National policy documents prepared within the framework of the plan are also prepared in line with the MDGs.
Preparing the Country Report • According to the MDG Report, Turkey 2010 • In many aspects, Turkey is well on her way to reaching the MDG targets. • Yet, structural inequalities, especially those related to geographical and social gender disparities, remain a challenge. Special attention must be paid to Goal 3 (gender equality) which is the area where Turkey is most likely to encounter serious difficulties and structural obstacles.
Preparing the Country Report • According to the MDG Report, Turkey 2010 • In the period 2005-2010 Turkey has achieved significant progress, especially in the area of mother and infant health, registering sharp reductions in infant, under-five and maternal mortality rates. Turkey is expected to reach the MDG targets in these areas with ease by 2015. • Another area in which Turkey has shown a remarkable improvement is Goal 8. Turkey has considerably increased Official Development Assistance (ODA) to developing countries.
Preparing the Country Report • MDG +10 Regional Conference, Istanbul-Turkey 2010 • Conference was held on 9-10 June 2010 before the Global Meeting in New York. It was hosted by the government of Turkey and co-organized by the UNDP and the UNECE. Participating countries in the region reviewed the progress towards achieving the MDGs and shared country-specific best practices and lessons learned, the conference also provided an opportunity to explore the region-specific dynamics around the MDGs. • In the meeting , Turkey’s country report was announced.
Population and Development Indicators Databank • It is a dynamic system which was established in order to provide timely, reliable andcomparable information in order toevaluate and monitor the implications ofthe programs in the field of populationand development. • Databank was developed under a project by TurkStat in cooperation with the UN. • Databank was presented to the users through the internet at the end of 2002.

Population and Development Indicators Databank • contains annual information of the indicators starting from 1990, • is updated annually, • presents data either in tabular orgraphical format, • includes meta data which gives information on definition, source and unit of the indicators, • contains gender base and urban-rural information, • contains 19 MDG indicators.
Population and Development Indicators Databank It is available under the web page of TurkStat (http://www.tuik.gov.tr)
Dissemination of MDG Data by DevInfo • Turkish version of the database (TurkInfo) was developed. • Database was installed to the TurkStat’s servers. • DevInfo web application was customized. • Data of the indicators and regional maps of Turkey were installed to the TurkInfo. • Control and test studies are going on. • TurkInfo will be published to the users in a short time.
Dissemination of MDG Data by DevInfo TurkInfo contains 2 dataset; • Population and Development Indicators Enriched by including regional data of the indicators • Millennium Development Indicators Indicators which are available for Turkey will be presented
