Bus Drop-off • If your student travels on the bus, then he/she enters the building immediately after exiting the bus. • Out of safety concerns, students are not allowed to return to the bus after exiting. • Students who leave items on the bus should report this immediately to the main office.
Morning Recess • Morning recess is from 8:22 a.m. to 8:32 a.m. • Homeroom begins at 8:35. This is the official start of the academic day. • Students who arrive to homeroom at 8:40, or later, are marked tardy.
School Supplies • This afternoon, your students went home with several items. Two of these items were pertaining to the school supply list. • One list is provided for your shopping convenience. • The other list is included in an envelope from a company that offers an online option.
Summer Reading • The summer reading activity sheets were also distributed today. • Summer reading activity sheets should be completed prior to the start of school. • It is not necessary to bring the activity sheets on the first day of school, but they will be collected soon after.
Medical Concerns • The nurse at Luther Elementary is Cheryl Mendonca. • Mrs. Mendonca has ongoing communication with Leslie Stolts from Hoyle. • Medications can be dropped off on Monday, August 27 which is the day before school starts.
Academics Grade 3 students study: • Math • Literacy (reading & writing) • Science • Social Studies • Enrichment: music, art, health, P.E. & computers
Homework • Homework assignments are structured to reinforce learning. • Homework assignments are NOT meant to create household chaos! • If an assignment takes over 30 minutes to complete, then write a note in the agenda.
Formal Assessments Grade 3 students participate in: • GATES Reading Comprehension • MCAS • Trimester pre-tests & post-tests
Communication • Teachers will generally communicate to you via a note in the agenda. E-mail is another means used. • The telephone “one call now” system is used for mass messaging. • Paper communication is being downsized.
Summer Slump • Research tells us that students can lose up to 35% of what they learned in an academic year over the course of a summer. • Consider establishing daily uninterrupted timed-reading opportunities. Set a timer for 15 minutes and then ask the “W” questions. • Research web sites that offer remediation in math facts. Hone those skills!
Dismissal • Parent dismissal takes place in the cafeteria at 3:05 p.m. • We will ask you for ID until you are considered a “regular”. • Bus dismissal immediately follows parent dismissal. • The school office closes at 3:30.
