Earthquakes and Seismic Waves Dan Tingley, Angel Achar, and Nick Franco
Fault • Fault - break in the rocks that make up the Earth’s crust • To be a fault, the rocks on either side must be moving • Sometimes the movement is sudden, and it causes an earthquake
Focus and Epicenter • Focus - the place in the Earth where the movement happens in an earthquake • Epicenter - the point on the Earth’s surface directly above the focus
Seismic Waves • Seismic waves are waves that travel through the Earth because of an earthquake • Two Kinds: Body and Surface waves -Body travel inside the Earth
P-Waves • Primary Waves • P-waves travel through all the layers of the Earth • The fastest of all seismic waves • Squeeze and pull rocks in same direction as the movement of the wave
S-Waves • Secondary Waves • Cause the rocks to move at a right angle to the movement of the wave • Slower than P-Waves
Surface Waves • Up and down, side to side movement • Travel along Earth’s surface • Cause the most damage in an Earthquake
