Scouting in the great multifaceted family • l • the beauty the world is experiencing today • what changed when Scouting started and what has changed since
The West and Latin America in the face of religious pluralism • US build a country from the various European traditions • America latina: Catholicism and some traditional religions achieved a certain modus vivendi,
_Scouting in the great multifaceted family • European countries don’t know what religious pluralism is. • Their experience is more of clashes of socio-religious identities, Jews, Catholics. Protestants, Orthodox, Muslims, religious wars and their response, which was tolerance.
Scouting in the great multifaceted family_ • But Europeansweremissionaries. • In evangelising, they clearly distanced themselves from paganism
“when the Mekong changed course” • Scouting was born at the end of the last great cycle of Christian missionary history.
It’s like the Mekong river that changes direction • The missionary current went from Europe to the rest of the World. • The new current comes from all the countries touched by the missions and goes everywhere.
Brotherhood: Christian missionaries revealed the human family • The missionary, brought two things, his faith and brotherhood. • The faith of the missionary was not always adopted, but what else did he bring? Yes Christianity brought brotherhood.
Jesus spoke to the human family • He who is not against us is with us • the day would come when all peoples would adore in Spirit and in Truth • “If someone invites you to dwell in his house, stay there”.
Scoutingisbrotherhood • As missions spread throughout the world, they expressed the message of the “human family” - brotherhood. • So Scouting, like the Olympic movement or the League of Nations, symbolises the birth of the human family.
Start to live like a family • Scouting was multi-religious almost from the very start • it was in this multi-religious climate that its Catholic expression flourished
The Holy Spirit and not Universal Reason • God had to mix up their languages so that they would all follow different paths. • The Holy Spirit is the guardian of humanity and its unity as a family.
The “love of life” in the great multifaceted family • Grabbing hold of this multifaceted human family with both hands • Being connected means being in communion with and using a spirit that no one can touch, one that’s too big to be tamed. The Spirit of God.
Exposingourintimacy. Being in communion • “you don’t know where it goes, you don’t know where it came from, it blows where it wants, you can’t reduce it to a handful of values”. To share life in the Spirit we need to expose ourselves to each other in our religious inspiration –
_ • “you don’t know where it goes, you don’t know where it came from, it blows where it wants, you can’t reduce it to a handful of values”.
_ • present ourselves to one another in religious terms • Or just be happy to share common values?
Is all that not essentially Scouting? • “I’m expecting the WYD to cause ferment” • “Go and serve” • “Peaceful co-existence between religions benefits secularism in the State.”
And that is our responsibility in Catholic Scouting • This force of brotherhood will be useful helping the great multi-faceted family to enjoy the diversity. To do this it is worth while returning to the gospel sources of the brotherhood of Scouting. And that is our responsibility in Catholic Scouting.
