Infinitives • In English = to + verb • To swim, to sing, to dance • In French, a verb with the ending still attached: • Today we will learn verbs ending in –er • dîner, danser • The –er ALWAYS sounds like [ay] at the end of a word
chanter [shan tay] = to sing J’aime chanter. I like to sing
Danser [dahn say] = to dance J’aime danser. [zj emm dahn say] I like to dance.
manger [mahn zjay] = to eat J’aime manger. [zj emm mahn zjay] I like to eat.
J’aime dîner au restaurant. • Dîner au restaurant [deen ay oh rest oh rah] = to dine at a restaurant
J’aime écouter la radio. Écouter [eh coot ay] = to listen Écouter la radio [eh coot ay la rah day oh]= to listen to the radio
Nager [nah zjay] = to swim J’aime nager. [zjemm nah zjay ] I like to swim.
