The Top Iconic Costumes from Classic Movies When you look back on classic movies what is usually remembered are the theme, acting performance or musical score. But fashion and costumes are no less important and some have remained in people’s memories for decades and copied and replicated no end. Here are some of the costumes seen in classic movies of yore that are still talked about in the world of fashion. Gone with the Wind (1939) This classic won eight Oscars at the 12th Academy Awards and is a story of the turbulent romance during the Civil War between Scarlet O’Hara and Rhett Butcher played by Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable respectively. Scarlet wears a number of stunning costumes throughout the movie, primarily to flaunt her style and wealth. Even the red dress that Rhett forces her to wear to humiliate her as a harlot is carried off well by Scarlet and stuns audiences of the movie. The Wizard of Oz (1935) The movie released in 1935 was the first Technicolor film and is Hollywood’s transition from black and white to color. The highlight of the costumes were the blue and white gingham pinafore dress and ruby red slippers worn by Dorothy (Judy Garland) as she moved from Kansas to the colorful land of Oz. The slippers were originally silver in the story but it was changed to red by the Director so that it could stand out against the yellow brick-paved road. The slippers have been so emblematic of those times that they have been hailed by the Smithsonian as treasures of American history.
Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961) Audrey Hepburn around this time was on a high, fresh from her hits “The Roman Holiday” and “Funny Face”. Breakfast at Tiffany’s is a romantic comedy and is a story of a young socialite played by Hepburn as Holly Golightly who is in love with New York. Hepburn wears many outfits in the movie that brings out her high-class status but what is famous as the Holly Golightly Breakfast at Tiffany's costume is the black dress she wore in the opening scene. This little black dress designed by Hubert de Givenchy is still considered to be the peak of twentieth-century fashion. The Seven Year Itch (1955) The film is famous for the iconic photo of Marylyn Monroe standing over a subway grate as her white dress is blown up around her. So memorable is this scene that in 2001, this white ivory cocktail dress was auctioned for $5.6 million, five times more than the Givenchy black dress of Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s. These are some of the famous costumes from classic films of Hollywood in no particular order of ranking.
