How is the Universe Arranged? The Geocentric Theory vs. The Heliocentric Theory
Since the Ancient Greeks, people have looked up to the skies and wondered how the universe was arranged • No one ever felt the Earth move, but they noticed that everything else in the sky did. • Therefore they thought the Earth was the motionless center of the Universe, and everything else moved clockwise around it.
In 140 AD Ptolemy refined this theory • Called the geocentric theory, he said the Earth was the center of the Universe, then there was the moon, sun, planets, and then finally Heaven, where God resided.
The Roman Catholic Church supported this theory • Geocentrism was accepted because the Church Fathers saw it supporting their doctrine • It became heresy to say anything different about the State of the Universe
One Man Begged to Differ • One lone soul in Poland thinks differently but fears publishing his theory until the time of his death. • His name was Copernicus, a Polish monk and astronomer.
Copernicus proposes the Heliocentric Theory • The heliocentric theory states the Sun is the center of the universe, and everything else, including the Earth revolves around it. This is what we believe to be true today. • The heliocentric theory will be disputed, until 1610, when Galileo using a telescope with stronger lens of his design comes up the scientific proof to support Copernicus’ theory.
