WELCOME Welcome to the Australian Navy Cadet Unit CIHS Hampton Park, and the ‘Advance’ programme, here at Hampton Park Secondary College. You are about to make an important choice, one which we think will provide you with a fantastic opportunity to learn, achieve success, make friends, challenge yourselves, and have lots of fun at the same time. We want you to make an informed decision about joining the two programmes we offer. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me in person, via phone or email (see the last slide for my contact details). SAFETY The ANC ‘triangle’ goals are • Everyone having fun • learning something • in a safe environment “Serious fun, Safely done” CAPT J. Gill ANC NCANC EVERYONE is responsible for safety in our Unit. Fun Learn Safety CIHS HAMPTON PARK
HOW WE OPERATE • The Australian Navy Cadets (ANC) is a part of the Australian Defence Force Cadet Organization (Army, Navy and Air Force) operating throughout Australia. • There are ANC community units across Australia. In a few cases, like ours, it operates in a High School, hence our unit’s name CIHS Hampton Park (Cadets in High School Hampton Park). • We chose to establish our unit since 1998 with financial support from the Victorian State Government through its then ‘Victorian’, and now called ‘Advance’ Youth Development Programme. • This has enabled us to offer two separate programmes – the ‘Advance’, and The Australian Navy Cadets. Students who join get the best of two programmes, both with common themes of preparing young people for ‘participation and volunteering in community life.’ Advance Handbook for Government Schools 2006, p.2 CIHS HAMPTON PARK
THE PROGRAMME ‘Advance is a youth development programme that provides opportunities for young people to work in partnership with community organizations on a project or series of activities that contribute to building their community’ (Advance Handbook for Government Schools 2005) ‘The essential elements of Advance are that young people DO something with their community, they do it in PARTNERSHIP with a community organisation and that it includes young people’s CHOICE.’ Our work with the Australian Navy Cadets as our Community Organization allows us to meet these elements. CIHS HAMPTON PARK
What we do in 1 The ‘Advance’ Programme is designed to run over 1-2 years. Students have five programme elements to qualify for the award of the ‘Advance’ Certificate. • They undertake 3 Learning Modules (Community, Communication, and Project Management skills development) • They do recognised training • They establish a community project or series of volunteering activities delivered in partnership with a community organisation • They reflect on and celebrate their achievements • They demonstrate involvement in decision making CIHS HAMPTON PARK
What we do in 2 Learning Module 1: Community The focus of Learning Module 1 is to develop young people’s self knowledge and increase understanding of their community and volunteering. Learning Module 2: Communication The focus of Learning Module 2 is on strengthening young people’s communication skills and teamwork. Learning Module 3: Project Management The focus of Learning Module 3 is on building young people’s project management skills. This relates specifically to the Advance community project (s) or series of volunteering activities that young People deliver in partnership with a community organisation. CIHS HAMPTON PARK
What we do in 3 Features • Community service, where participants take an active role in their community, so developing a sense of community service • Flexibility for individual students, catering for their individual needs • Voluntary participation • Leadership opportunities • Team Work Outcomes • Personal and skill development leading to participants developing and improving their self-confidence and interpersonal skills • Positive relationship building with young people, adults and the community CIHS HAMPTON PARK
ADVANCE AND THE ANC Q. Why do we offer the two programmes? A. The ‘Advance’ programme requires students to work with a Community Organization, so in 1998 we chose the Australian Navy Cadets, and we’ve never looked back. Q. How do they work together? A. To get the ‘Advance’ Certificate of Completion, students complete a series of activities, measured against specific criteria. The beauty of our work with the Australian Navy Cadets is that it allows students to use some of the Cadet activities to complete ALL of the requirements of ‘Advance’. Once students have achieved their ‘Advance’ certificate they remain in Cadets until they choose to leave or turn 20. CIHS HAMPTON PARK
ADVANCE AND THE ANC… continued Q. What else do students get from the Australian Navy Cadets? A. Being an Australian Navy Cadet also allows students to complete the Cadet curriculum, which leads to achieving skill recognition, as well as (and probably more importantly) leadership development by being promoted in rank; but that is not all. Additional bonuses are extra activities such as Sea Rides, Ship Visits and Annual Camps. Q. Is the ANC connected with the State Government? A. Only that it is our Community Organization we chose to work with. The ANC is a separate (and Federal) organization and has its own values and goals, along with its own membership, curriculum, rules and requirements. Please note that Cadets are not members of any Defence Force and cannot be called up for any military service as a cadet. CIHS HAMPTON PARK
THE Australian Navy Cadets PROGRAMME THE ANC is primarily a youth development programme with a dual military and maritime focus. “Cadets learn about sailing and seamanship, develop leadership skills and learn how to communicate effectively. They develop confidence, pride and self-discipline whilst ‘having an ocean of fun’ and making ‘loads of new friends along the way’. Cadets reflect the Navy's strong commitment to the Australian community and thousands of young Australians have improved their lives by learning citizenship through seamanship as Australian Navy Cadets.” http://www.cadetnet.gov.au/anc/Pages/Home.aspx CIHS HAMPTON PARK
THE STRUCTURE OF THE ANC The ANC models itself on the Royal Australian Navy. There are various Flotillas around the country, with a small number of individual ANC Units in each Flotilla. CIHS HAMPTON PARK

COMMITMENT TO CADETS COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT – ACTIVE CITIZENSHIP This is a long-term commitment that families and Cadets make. Along with the fun activities like sailing, our camps and interstate travel, cadets are expected to show their commitment to both cadets and their community. During the year, apart from normal parade nights on Wednesdays, Cadets are expected To participate in • ANZAC Day activities – Local Schools/RSL • Recruitment Days • Public ceremonies at the Shrine – National Service, Reserves, Remembrance Day, Operation Pedestal and others. • Information Nights • School Activities, including assemblies We hope Cadets stay in the Unit for as long as possible, until they turn 20. COSTS One of the best things about this programme is that it is mostly funded from the State Government, as part of the Advance programme. The Government continues to see the benefits of Advance – and so do we. As a result: There is almost no cost to the cadets (and that of course means Parents). All major costs – such as the ANC Uniforms, equipment, special camps, bus trips, CPR/First Aid, sailing and other ANC activities are covered by the Advance funding, the ANC and the Royal Australian Navy. However, because of this, I try to teach the Cadets that they need to respect the fact that so much is provided for them for nothing, and all other Community Units have to fight for every penny; and their cadets pay a lot of money for camps and activities…so…. CIHS HAMPTON PARK
COSTS…continued • When cadets join they purchase a Unit Polo Shirt (in 2011 cost $30.00) and a Unit Cap (2011 $10.00). This is the only compulsory purchase. This is worn as casual gear to identify us when we are not in ANC uniform. Both items are for cadets to own and take when they finally end. It also allows cadets to look like a cadet until they get their own uniform. Currently (March 2012) we have run out – I am sourcing more. • There is usually a small (nominal) charge for major camps – this varies, depending on where the camp is, and operator costs. Local camps are currently $10.00, and have been since 1999. This may have to be reviewed. • There may be incidental costs, such as for white T-Shirts for Night Rig, or thick socks for boots, or black socks for ceremonial events. CIHS HAMPTON PARK
OTHER ITEMS AVAILABLE Sometimes I am able to get ANC, Navy or other Defence Force items for purchase at a much reduced cost. For example, cadets can still currently purchase an • RAN (Navy) cap ($10.00) • ANC sling bag ($25.00) (only a few left) • RAN duffle bag ($20.00) • RAN Teddy Bear sailor (cute) ($20.00) What I can get depends on what is on offer to me.
