CORE INDICATORS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH IN ONTARIO Objectives • To standardize definitions and calculation methods for chronic disease and risk factor indicators to build capacity for chronic disease surveillance. • To provide accurate information that can be used by public health epi’s and others to generate indicators • To ensure this info is readily accessible • To advocate that public health units (PHU’s) have access to good quality data • To encourage PHU’s and others to use the same indicator definitions and methods • To increase awareness of indicators • To report accomplishments of project

CORE INDICATORS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH IN ONTARIO Activities • • Review & evaluate best practices on indicator definitions, • calculation methods and data sources • • Complete indicator & resource documents • Post documents on website • • Liaise with organizations to improve data quality and • access to data • • Encourage adoption of indicator definitions and methods • • Promote indicators through publications and presentations • • Complete summary report

CORE INDICATORS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH IN ONTARIO Expected Results • Public health units (PHU’s) and others will use consistent, standardized definitions when conducting chronic disease and risk factor surveillance. • Information and resources that assist in generating these indicators will be readily available on website. • Increased awareness of website. • Core Indicators will be incorporated into provincial surveillance protocols and other documents.

  5. CORE INDICATORS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH IN ONTARIO Funding • Public Health Agency of Canada’s Enhanced Surveillance for Chronic Disease Grant Funding Program • Budget: $111,000

  6. CORE INDICATORS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH IN ONTARIO Deliverables • At minimum (to fulfill grant requirements): • Revise 24 chronic disease and risk factor indicators • Create at least 3 new indicators • Create at least 3 new resources

CORE INDICATORS FOR PUBLIC HEALTH IN ONTARIO • Cancer subgroup indicators: • 6 Smoking indicators • Cancer incidence, Cancer Mortality • OBSP Mammography, Mammography, Clinical Breast Exams, Cervical Cancer Screening • Colorectal Cancer Screening • Sun Safety • Additional indicators time-permitting Core Indicators for Public Health in Ontario- Organizational Structure • Healthy Eating & Active Living indicators: • Vegetable and Fruit Consumption, Food Insecurity, Cost of a Nutritious Food Basket • Physical Activity Index, Physical Activity Frequency • Adult Body Mass Index, Adolescent Body Mass Index • Chronic Health Problems Prevalence • 4 alcohol indicators • Additional indicators time-permitting APHEO APHEO Executive Core Indicators-PHAC Project Steering Committee Core Indicators Project Manager Harleen Sahota Core Indicators Work Group Chair: Mary-Anne Pietrusiak • Types of Documents: • Indicators • Syntax files • Data source pages • Resource documents: e.g. Paper on Standardization of Rates + CIWG recommendations • Leading Causes indicators: • All Cause Mortality • All Cause Hospitalization Leading Causes Sub-group lead: JoAnn Heale Cancer, Smoking and Sun Safety Sub-group lead: Brenda Guarda Healthy Eating and Active Living Sub-group lead: Shanna Hoetmer Reproductive Health Sub-group lead: Mary-Anne Pietrusiak Infectious Disease Sub-group lead: Sherri Deamond Note: In addition to this internal structure, members of the Core Indicators for Public Health in Ontario project liaise with external organizations as necessary and as required.
