LITERARY TERMS PAST TERMS: imagery (animal/death/silence/normalcy), memoir, • SIMILE: a comparison of two objects using “like” or “as” • EX. ______ as a fox; ______ as a pig • NIGHT: • “A great tidal wave of men came rolling onward and would have crushed me like an ant.” (64) • “The snow was like a carpet, very warm, very gentle. I fell asleep.” (65) • PERSONIFICATION: giving inanimate objects human characteristics or traits • EX. “Opportunity was knocking at my door”; “time flew by” • NIGHT: • “Death wrapped itself around me until I was stifled. It stuck to me.” (64)

3. Quote analysis • QUOTE ANALYSIS: Another way to analyze a book is to examine specific quotes or parts of the book. By looking at these smaller pieces, we should be able to know what’s going on in the book at this time (context clues!) and then begin to analyze why it is significant. • SAMPLE QUOTE:“Death wrapped itself around me until I was stifled. It stuck to me.” (64)… “Around me everything was dancing a dance of death. I made my head real. I was walking in a cemetery, among stiffened corpses, logs of wood… No one asked for help. You died because you had to die. There was no fuss.” (65) CONTEXT SIGNIFICANCE • Death imagery/personification is used. • Death was common and expected. There was no time for fuss or sadness – it was normal. Elie is describing all of the people he sees dead/dying when they stop for a break on the 42 mile run to Gleiwitz.

5. QUOTE ANALYSIS • “My boy! Don’t you recognize me? I’m your father! You’re hurting me… you’re killing your father! I’ve got some bread… for you too!” (74) (HINT: This is NOT Elie’s father!) • “Like a wild beast, I cleared a way for myself to the coffee cauldron. … he gulped it down – an animal gratitude.” ( ) • “I felt like leaping at his throat, strangling him. But I had no longer had the courage or the strength. I was riveted to my father’s deathbed. My hands hurt, I was clenching them so hard. Oh, to strangle the doctor and the others. To burn the whole world! My father’s murderers. But, they cry stayed in my throat” (79)

6. QUOTE ANALYSIS • “Head of Block: “Don’t forget you’re in a concentration camp. Here every man has to fight for himself and not think of anyone else. Even of his father. Here, there are no fathers, no brothers, no friends. Everyone lives and dies for himself alone.” (80)….. Elie: “He was right I thought in the most secret region of my heart, but I dared not admit it.” (80) • “I did not move. I was afraid. My body was afraid of also receiving a blow…. I could see he was still breathing – spasmodically… I did not move…. When I got down after roll call, I could see his lips trembling as he murmured something. Bending over him, I stayed gazing at him for over an hour, engraving into myself the picture of his blood-stained face, his shattered skull. Then, I had to go to bed… above my father who was still alive” (81)

7. QUOTE ANALYSIS • “Our first act as free men was to throw ourselves onto the provisions. We thought only of that. Not of revenge. Not of our families. Only of bread… And even when we were no longer hungry there was still no one who thought of revenge.” (83) • “I wanted to see myself in the mirror hanging on the opposite wall. I had not seen myself since the ghetto. From the depths of the mirror, a corpse gazed back a me. The look in his eyes, as they stared into mine, has never left me.” (83)

8. ANNOTATING & Talking to the Text Annotating or “talking to the text” is basically a fancy name for taking notes directly ON a text. When you are reading, you should be looking for the main ideas of the passage, not every little detail. Not only can this help your comprehension, but it will save you time studying! • Things to do: • Circle words you don’t know • Underline or highlight important facts/ideas • Write summaries/ questions/ personal relations in the margins
