The purpose of health education is to build life skills that will have an impact on students well-being.
Health : a state of being associated with reduced risk of disease and illness. It includes the presence of wellness.
Wellness:high quality of life. • Living up to ones full potential even if health is compromised. • All wellness dimensions are within reasonable balance.
Wellness Dimensions • Mental and Emotional- coping skills, feelings • Intellectual- knowledge building, creativity • Physical- fitness, nutrition, self-care, safety • Social- relationship building, family dynamics, friends • Occupational- education, vocation, careers • Spiritual- self-awareness, values, ethics • Environmental- community and global awareness
Health Curriculum Topics Covered: Health and Wellness • Mental health and illness • Stress management • Nutrition and Fitness • Licit and illicit: drugs, tobacco and alcohol • First Aid and safety • Disease, including STI’s and HIV/AIDs • Environmental issues • Human Sexuality/Family Life/Parenting
