Organizing, Managing, Communicating and Leveraging Information and Knowledge to Support and Deliver CRP ResultsA hands-on Workshop on Approaches, Tools, Systems and Services Building Block on Aggregating and Re-using Knowledge Facilitator: PB ilri, ciat, cpwf, worldfish, iita, africarice, bioversity, cta, iwmi BB Re-use
Some terminology we used • Re-use • Social marketing • Multi-use • Multiple use • Multi-purpose • Integrate • Re-purpose • Aggregate • Harvest • Repackage • … BB Re-use
Why do we need this for our CRPs? • Fundamentally, researchers need this if they are to get from outputs to outcomes • Re-purpose tools/practices across projects • Get knowledge out to end users • Public goods need to be curated and translated, beyond automation • Overcome atomisation and fragmentation of knowledge • Make our knowledge more accessible, t get bigger impact • Cross-disciplinary necessity • Help end users by aggregating multiple sources • Cleverly and ethically exploit others’ work and help it flow to end users • Get to multiple forms of communicating messages • Plumbing knowledge so it gets to individuals in forms they can use • Re-use and build upon existing knowledge, show gaps … • To efficiently manage and target large quantities of information • Overcome diffuse focus, get coherence • Help efficiently contribute to multiple CRPs BB Re-use
What are ways to do this – 1? • Social marketing to mass audiences • Partnering with community centers • Campaign approach for different target audiences • Training via video • Multi-format each message (article, video, blog, mobile app ..) • Infographics • Have rss and open tools for others to use • Synthesis, scanning across projects • ‘silo-flyers’ and interpretation (roles, functions, people) • Translation (into languages; levels of language) • Adapt workflows (publish once, reuse often) • Creative commons • Automatic alerts and discovery tools BB Re-use
What are ways to do this – 2? • Ensure credit is given (by re-users) • Encourage DIY aggregation (and have content for them) • Standard tags and tagging • ‘Show the shop floor’ of the research process, before final outputs (working out loud!) • Aggregate ideas / through eg engagement on blogs/social media • Get into the ‘outputs pipeline’ of researchers, early … to proactively repurpose and reuse and explot • ‘Exploit’ and re-use/share people and expertise (across centers, crps, partners) • Inventorise knowledge across centers and activities • Pyramid of attention: [ ‘routine good stuff’ – most/all may not need much repurposing; ‘better than average’ – worth some extra effort; ‘star quality’ – loads of attention ] all knowledge does not deserve/require full repurposing etc. How to forecast these is an issue! • Tell the ‘people’ stories, not just the science … • Develop a ‘nose for winners’ BB Re-use
Critical success factor needed to take advantage of this BB? • Behavioural change of scientists to value re-purposing and re-using [IP issues, guard reputation, re-assure that openand re-used is ok] • Buy in • Targeting – who, and for what? • Where do WE have leverage? • Which partners to work with? • Sell this approach • Share our expertise and learning across BB Re-use
