Data discovery and adding place to the DNER Cressida Chappell History Data Service
Introduction • Two feasibility studies • Geo-Data Browser Project • Geo-Crosswalk Project • Looking into improving: • access to geo-spatial data by providing a data discovery service as part of the DNER • spatial searching within the DNER
Project Details • Funding • JISC DNER Development Programme • Time-frame • August 2000 - May 2001 • Project Partners • EDINA, History Data Service and UK Data Archive • Associate Partners • MIMAS and Archaeology Data Service
Geo-Data Browser Project Investigating the demand for and the issues surrounding the establishment of a geo-spatial data resource discovery tool as part of the DNER
Tasks • Assess requirements for a geo-data browser and portal • Review the NGDF Metadata Guidelines against the needs of UK academia • Investigate controlled vocabularies • Identify suitable geo-spatial resources and assess what metadata exists • Produce a service definition and an architecture design specification
Outputs and Deliverables • Requirements document • Recommendations on extensions to the NGDF Metadata Guidelines • Recommendations on searching methods • Listing of suitable geo-spatial data resources • Service definition document • Architecture design specification
Key Recommendations • JISC should fund a small pilot project to build a demonstrator Geo-data Browser to • promote the possibilities of a real service • show to research councils and learning and teaching communities to get their backing • show to geo-spatial data creators to encourage them to create and deposit metadata
Geo-Crosswalk Project Feasibility study to investigate the feasibility of developing and providing an online British and Irish gazetteer service for use within the DNER
Tasks • Identify user requirements • Identify suitable data sources • Investigate appropriate data models for maintaining, storing and accessing the gazetteer • Determine APIs required for query support • Assess relevant protocols to support remote access
Outputs and Deliverables • Requirements document • Recommendations on core datasets • Formal specification for a data model for a gazetteer service • Report describing the issues surrounding the interrogation of a gazetteer service using Z39.50 and other relevant protocols
Key Recommendations • JISC should fund a small pilot project to develop a demonstrator Gazetteer Service • Illustrating • use of a gazetteer to enhance the geographic searching of an existing DNER service • use of a gazetteer to assist in the semi-automatic geographic indexing of descriptions of DNER resources • reference use • Allowing further investigation of • issues involved in making the Gazetteer a Z39.50 target • questions about performance and scalability of the server
